Pueblo is as high as I have seen it in years.  It has been higher, according to the high water line but it is getting close for sure.

I  picked up my boat at 7:30 only to discover a flat tire on the trailer and the other tire was pretty low too.  Limped over to the tire store and they replaced both value stems.  Good idea to check those first of the season.  Anyway, didn't get on the water until 12:30 and was off at 5pm.

Unfortunately, I left my camera in the car so no pictures to show.  Boated 8 largemouth ranging from 2.2 to 3.5.  Also lost two others at the boat.  The fish are moving up and are fat and hungry.  Water is warming and reached 54 in the coves.  I have caught more fish than that in a day down there but mostly little smallies.  Looks like it will be a good season!

One week you are a hero...next week a zero!

Went back to Pueblo Sunday afternoon.  Took our club secretary with me.  He caught on largemouth and I caught none.  Ran into a couple of former members of our club in the back of the cove I like to fish.  Jim Douglas caught a 3# and said he just lost what looked like a 5#.  Ray Cooper caught two in the 2# class while we were back there.

So, the fish were still around but it looked like they pulled out a little.  Could have been the cold fronts that went through.  Water temp in the back was 54, 48 at the boat dock.  Clearing but dropping slightly.

Headed for Santa Rosa on the 25th...still looking for a map of the lake!

Continued follow-up on Pueblo.  Full day on the water Saturday, only three keepers and one short fish for the two of us.  Looks like the weather caused the fish to pull back a little.  Talked to a couple of other guys and they said it was much slower than a couple of weeks ago.  Could be we have stuck a lot of the fish and they are just getting spooky too.

Still Pueblo is a great place to fish...in between the 40mph wind gusts.  Look for it to improve as the fish start moving up on the beds.  5280 bass hunters is holding an open tournament this Saturday.  A team event with $50 entry fee and 100% payback.  Sign up at the south marina parking lot beginning at 5am.

The water level continues to drop on Pueblo...probably in anticipation of the run off which hasn't occurred yet.  Many of the locations I wanted to fish were out of the water.

I had the pleasure of fishing with our club secretary yesterday.  Frank Bianchi has a 17' tracker that beats the hell out of my 14' 10 horse aluminum boat.  We hit the water at 9am and fished until 6pm.  Caught many bass on a number of different baits.  Nothing really large...but lots of largemouth, small mouth, and a couple of spots.  Frank also caught a 20# carp that bit a Berkley gulp minnow on a drop shot rig.

Fish are still moving up and it appears they are getting ready to move onto beds.  Saw some cleared rock areas but no defined beds yet.  A couple of the smallies were already full of eggs and about ready to go.  Fish were caught on plastics and spinner baits.

Be prepared for a boat inspection for zebra mussels before you launch and also when you come off the lake.  They will be checking live wells, bilge, and motor for water.  Later this spring they will also be initiating a wash off program.  Didn't take but a few minutes to comply.

All in all, a very nice day.  The weather was warm but not too hot as there was cloud cover in the afternoon.  About 3 hours of windy weather as storms moved through the area but no rain on the part of the lake we were fishing.  We stayed in a cove on the north side most of the afternoon and waited for the wind to die down before crossing back to the south boat ramp.  According to Frank..."one of the best days ever out of his little Tracker".

Pikes Peak Bassmasters will be holding a two day tournament at Lathrop State Park on May 31 and June 1st.  We will also be doing a night tournament on Pueblo later this summer.

Saturday, May 17 on Pueblo....

6 smallies, largest 3.2# one at 1.7, the rest about a pound.  Fish are moving up on the beds right now.

Denver Bassmasters had 15 boats in a one day tournament and Springs Bass Club had 6 boats in a 2 day tournament.

Fished Pueblo in the 21st.  Smallies moving up on the beds.  Spots are also milling around but not locked on yet.  Bigger fish seem to be spots while we did find a bunch of smaller large mouth in the coves.  Water temp still in the high 50s.  Thanks to Larry Krueger, Treasurer of the Colorado Bass Federation for sharing his 21 Basscat with me for the day.

Still looking for some non-boaters for our club for this year.  Anyone interested in finding out about Pikes Peak Bassmasters can call me at 528-6400.

Remaining events are in state; however, Navajo requires both a Colorado and New Mexico license.

Next three are all on the front range...Lathrop, Trinidad, and Pueblo.  For more info, give me a call....528 6400.

I have about 5 hours to fish Pueblo on Thursday.  Any suggestions on the time period I should fish?  The weather is supposed to be in the high 80's to low 90's.

From a boat or on the shore?

If using a boat, canoe, or float...early morning before the wind comes up.  From the shore...when ever.  The fish are up on the beds and you can see them when the wind is calm.  Some really nice spots and larger smallmouth can be caught.  Hopefully you will practice catch and release.

Best wishes,

Mike

Update June 8...

Fish are up shallow, caught some very nice largemouth in 1 to 2' of water.  Water temp 64.  Was a cool and overcast for much of the day.  Saw some pics of a really nice stringer of wipers caught on the west end.

Best wishes,

Mike

Fished Pueblo last Thursday (I went to Brush Hollow first but it's basically turning into a mud hole).  I was on the water about 6:30 and left about noon.  The fishing was definitely the best between 8:00 a.m and 10:00 a.m.  I caught about 15 total.  Three were keeper LM and one keeper SM.  I tried several methods to catch them (this is why I love bass fishing).  I drop shotted, flipped a lizard, used a top water, rigged a worm wacky, threw crankbaits, and used tubes.  I caught or had hits on every presentation; however, the best by far was the lizard worked around brush and the drop shot in 20 - 25 feet of water on ledges.  These two methods also produced the largest fish.  All the fish were put back, as always, waiting to be caught again.
