I like to throw the Baby 1- anytime the fish are shallow but have allways had trouble with the hooks getting tangled. Does anyone what size and brand of hooks will solve this problem ?
I don't mind not knowing all the answers, but I keep forgeting the danged questions.

I love these baits but have the same trouble at times. Didn't someone come out with a short shank treble recently? Seems I remember reading that somewhere. You could probably change out just one and solve the problem.

Great question...I am anxiously awaiting an answer to this!

I religously use the Baby One's & have the same problem. I catch so many fish on them though that I have just dealt with it rather than try to find a fix.

This is one bait I have seen on the store shelves for years, but have never used.  I have a similar issue with Bandit at times, but like others here - stick with the standard triple grip hooks because of the past success I have had.  How deep does the Baby 1- run and what are your favorite colors?

They run about 1ft deep. One of my favorite colors is the brown craw.

The 1- will run from maybe 1ft. to right on the surface depending on how you hold your rod. I have tried a short shank treble on the front, but they still tangle ocassionaly. I have seen guys cut 1 of the prongs off the trebles, but I really don't like to do that.

The new Elite series Triple grip has a shorter shak and should help with the tangling problem.  Remind me next time we get on the water Paw Paw and I will give you a few.  ;)

I bought mine through Monster .

Thanks Shawn, I will try to remember. Its going to be time to throw them before too long.

Swede,

You need to pickup a couple, these are great swallow water baits.

I like the shad,  perch and crawfish color patterns baits.

I love fishing these baits and have the same problem with the hooks getting
tangled up.

Shawn,

Thanks for the tip on where to pick some up at.

Aw heck, who needs to worry about the hooks tanglin' when ya catch em like this!!!

the Baby 1 is the only shallow crank i throw. I have caught so many fish with this lure. I have on tied on all the time. My favorite patterns are the fire shad, red fire shad and chartruse/blue back.

Have you tried cutting off one of the hooks on the front and back?

I use lots of manns -1's,, sometimes i just remove the back hook,, seems to me the fish attack it at the head and the front hook gets them

Donald Garner

I had thought about removing the belly hook.

98% of the bass I've caught on my -1's have all been on the trail hook.

I don't have it happen too often with the -1's actually, but I get them all the time when I used to throw the C4's, which is just one of the reasons I stopped fishing them. I always have a -1 tied on no matter what. Its the best reaction bait when fishing around submerged grass IMO. Best color is Ghost minnow.

Gamakatsu No. 5 trebles on my McStick are close together and never tangle, they are also really sticky. I hit a 10lb striper on the outside of his face yesterday and all three hooks dug in. I had a friend who had hits on another jerkbait that didn't hook up and the ones that did the jerkbait feel off as soon as the fish were netted.

My point here is they are short shanked good hooks and I am going to try them on my Mann's and other lures that tangle along with some lures that just need new hooks.

I am not sure of the exact model or if Gamakatsu makes different model of their #5 trebles, maybe someone could help out on that question?
