I'm not towards any brand . I'm looking at Lew's reels and the Shimano Curado 200K, Daiwa Tatula CT Type-R, Abu Garcia REVO SX Gen 4 Casting Reels. the Shimano Curado 200K i would be more in to it but dont know about the drag its only 11

Personally, if it was 'I' doing the shopping, 'I' would go more for a 50-50 split in cost.....actually I PROBABLY if had to choose....spend more on the rod than the reel.

Rods are the true 'essence' of enjoying the hunt.
A good rod can make a 'fair' reel work as good as/better than a reel making a rod perform better.

LATER when you step up AGAIN, which you will lo, you can spend the whole ball of wax on the REEL.

I like your thoughts on a 'high speed' reel and the Revo line up has a GREAT FOLLOWING from new and experienced anglers.

These are just MY thoughts....but I upgraded by RODS way before I up graded my reels.
Never regretted IT ONCE!

And YA, I pay WAY TO MUCH for BOTH NOW!  ~roflmao

Again I agree with you Anal.
I would rather spend more on a rod than a reel. Luckily I have found a reel in a price range I like, which allows me to spend more on the rods.

Welcome to the group. This is a great bunch of people.  I'm just going to cut to the chase. You can get a set up that performs at a very high level for $210.00.  There is a large following of Dobyns Fury owners here and for good reason. The series fishes well above it's price point.  There is also a great following of Diawa Tatula CT and Diawa Fuego CT owners here.  Ff you have your sights set on something else, that's fine but for my money, this is exactly where I would go and be confident you put some good stuff in your hands.

LgMouthGambler

You can find really good deals on the Fuego CT, and they are very easy to tune. Same reel as the Tatula CT, but without the T Wing. I have one that I got just to see what the potential of the reel is, and its got PLENTY of potential. It will perform with those reels in the $200-300 range, with a few dollars in mods. I changed the spool bearings, and added bearings to the levelwind and handle knobs. I think I have about a total to $110 in the reel, and its a singing some beach,.

What LMG said.

I don't have the fuego but do have the Tat CT. The CT's are excellent, and a small upgrade like the bearings make those things casting machines. They would fall in your price point, and you'd have 100 bucks for a rod putting you into a more sensitive, quality rod than anything in a 40-50 price point.

I have both the fuego ct and the one with the t-wing. To me, the fuego performs pretty good without any mods and casts just as good as the t-wing in my opinion and its a bit cheaper.

Why are you geared towards the brand 13?

well I think I narrowed it down to $99 Shimano Casitas 150 Casting Reel, $99 Quantum Accurist Casting Reels, $120 13 Fishing Inception Casting Reel. I went to cabelas and picked up all the $99 to $179 and i through out the $149 and above yes i like them but think it was a little to much for right now. these are the reels that felt good in my hand I was there for like over 2 hr and i was looking at rods too but most of my time was looking at reels and not 1 employee came ask if i need help until I was leaving the area they all went pass me and went to the person next to me. maybe this was because im only 5"5 and the other people was taller then me but who knows this is beside the point.

Shimano Casitas 150 Casting Reel 7.2:1 Gear Ratio 4+1 Bearings 12lb max drag graphite frame and side plates
what got me worried is the 4.1 bearings and the all graphite frame and side plates dont know how long it will last.

Quantum Accurist Casting Reels 7.0:1 Gear Ratio  6.1 Bearings 12lb max drag aluminum frame aluminum gear side plate. i haven't heard good things about Quantum/zebco

13 Fishing Inception Casting Reel 8.1:1 Gear Ratio 7.1 Bearings 18lb max drag aluminum frame graphite  side plates

but still open to suggestions. Thank you all for your advice

oOSteelOo,  ~c~ ~c~ ~c~

Actually, I'm surprised niether I NOR anyone mentioned going to an actual STORE and handling the Reels and Rods in your hands?????

It's something that is recomended around here A LOT!
Doesn't matter HOW GREAT A REEL/ROD is........if it's not comfortable in your hands......IT'S WORTHLESS!

Cabelas around me in the past WAS great for customer service/support....almost to a fault.
But now that BPS owns them...I think they inherited BPS customer service policies. lo

The being short aspect........US SHORT ANGLERS HAVE TO STICK TOGETHER! lo (I'M 5'5" 135 LBS)
BUT  the voice and attitude of a 7' 280 LB. linebacker.  ;)

Couple of questions/thoughts...being an all around setup....does the weight matter at all too you?
How long is an average 'outting'?
Weight can mean a lot if your an angler who likes to be out 6+ hrs. per outting.......believe it or not, even though a lb. or so doesn't seem much....6 hrs. of non-stop casting really can take it's toll.

I'm going to LET LMG and the boys supply the Reel input he/they are more qualified than I, LMG for example cleans/tunes his own reels and does A LOT of others tune ups too.
I know my stuff....BUT HE/THEY are true reel professionals!!!!!!!
(He/they can explain better about reel bearings and the amount of or not actually beneficial to a reels actual performance. (industry has kind of went over board on the bearing count, in MY eyes, less but higher quality bearings are better than more of less.
Many of the bearings are actually in things like the handles and such)

If you can, once you decide on the reel....go back to Cabelas and TELL them you need/want to feel the reel ON THE ROD ITSELF!

A heavier reel on a lighter rod and Vise-versa can really make a setup be 'top heavy' or just plain 'UNBALANCED' making casting distance and accuracy a challenge.

I'm into 'LIGHT' but not at the expense of performance.

Then after you have choosen your setup.....GO HOME AND BUY IT ON LINE!  ;) ;D
SHOW THEM WHO'S THE BOSS!!!!! ~roflmao

GOOD LUCK on your search!!

The 13 Omen Black is about as good as it gets in the $100 range. As far as reels I would agree with one of the Daiwa models that have already been mentioned or a Citica .

Princeton_Man

I'm kinda late to the game here, I'd recommend going to the Dobyns Store pick up a Fury that fits your fishing needs (probably a 733C or 734C), then get a Tatula CT ($20 off) or Lew's Tournament MB for it. There are some reviews here on both. You'll be within budget, you'll have a damned fine combination to start that will serve you well.

I am with the others.  Spend the money on the rod.  I spent a little more on my rods than I wanted, but really like them.  Been awhile, but I really liked the Duckett rods.  Good performance for the cost.  Dobyns has also gotten into the lower price point market and make good rods as well.  Also, check out the classifieds here.  I have picked up some good reels from those looking to upgrade.

Like others said, try them out to see how they feel in your hands.  I was actually looking at other rods before I went with the Duckett rods.  You might be surprised.  One other piece of advice:  check the rods to make sure the eyelets are straight!!  No lie, you will be amazed how many are off  :o

I had 6 of the Accurists. They all had the same issue right out of the box. I got little response when trying to deal with their customer service. I still have one that works and I use it on my back up flipping stick. I had to replace the handle because it fell apart. I do have both the Daiwa Fuego CT and Tatula CT and love them both. Like everyone said, they are great reels for the money.

aaron_Rockwell

I would go with Daiwa i own 4 Tatula two sv and a ct type r and a ct . they are great. I have two new in last 6 month Shimano citica and both have needed to be sent back for warranty and that is 4 to 6 weeks to get back.

thank you guys very much ~fff ~fff ;D ~roflmao

Did you make a decision?  Curious what you finally went with.  I assume you have made a purchase.

If not, I would like to suggest the 6'10" MHF Tatula from jet.com for $93.28.  (And is where I bought mine.)  These rods list for about $150.  I personally feel you won't find a better rod at that price.  The Fuego CT is currently available for a bit under $70 from ebay.  I have seen them listed for just under $56, but you have to keep checking.  So....for a max of $164 you will have a fantastic combo that will be quite versatile.

A fellow member on another site has gone to the Daiwa Aird X as he feels they are as good as most $150-$200 rods.  No personal experience with them, but trust his opinions.

oOSteelOo  Where are you located. If you are anywhere near Md I run more than a dozen Daiwa Tatula, Tatula CT and Tatula Type Rs and one Daiwa Exceler ( the predecessor to the Fuego CT).  If you do not mind meeting me I would be happy to let you cast a few to get an idea of how the Daiwa reels perform. I had been fishing a lot of BPS, and Shimano reels till I handled my friend's Daiwa Exceler. That was it for me. None of mine are modded, they perform flawlessly as is.  I know with a few extra upgrades they would perform even better but they are great as they are.
Any welcome on here and I just wanted to offer you this opportunity. I have had members from several boards come over and try out some of my rods and reels before they made purchases themselves.
