Since the last outing here didn't turn out the way I had hoped I was eager to take another crack at Squam.  This time with my nephew TJ who is an angler on the rise.   Water temp was just over 70 and air was around the same when we launched.  And yes it was raining, thankfully the rain stopped and we were left with overcast skies throughout the day.  Wind was light out of the southeast.  I thought the day was going to be a drop shot fest deep.  Half of that was right as the better smallies were caught in deeper than 35 ft of water but not on drop shot.  There were numerous 1 lb fish in the 20 - 30 foot depths.  I lost count of how many fish we caught but it was a bunch.  Oddly the best fish of the day was a 4 1/4 pound largemouth that came off a mid lake rock pile that was 6 - 8 feet deep.  The boat drifted while I was retying and figured why not make a couple casts while getting back out and surprise surprise, second cast the bait was stopped cold by a green fish.  We did have a few smallies in the 2 to 2 1/2 lb range each but the bigger ones eluded us.  Overall a much better outing than a couple week prior.

Sounds like a fun outing. I never got to fish Squam when I was up that way. I will have to try it next time up.

It is a interesting lake to fish.  It is also a navigational nightmare.  You really need to pay attention to markers on the lake.  You can go from 70 feet deep to 5 in a hurry and that being out in the middle of the lake.  It is by far the hardest lake to navigate in the lakes region of NH but also the most stunning.  Just a beautiful natural lake.
