Quantity versus quality or something like that. I had techniques that, quite frankly, worked very well but for some reason or other I got away from. Like many I bought new and "better" baits guaranteed to outfish any bait you had, of course it took a learning curve so I quit using the old ones so I now have enough "stuff" to outfit a couple 3 pros.
The monkey did too good a job so, except for tackle like hooks, line, weights and the like are all I'll need to buy for 40 or 50 years.
Why do we do this?

Because we can?

I am always afraid of being in the situation of knowing what works, and not having it.

I'm one of those guys who rigs up 15 rods the night before, and then cuts everything off and re-rigs when I get to the lake.

I think the lure  ;) of "Something New" or "New must be better" infects most fishermen.  It also happens to hot rodders, golfers and many other activities.  I am more the opposite from Paul.  I tend to rig up 15 rods and end up using just a couple.  I think I need to experiment more.
I knew I shoulda re-tied!!

It's an addiction. I have a shop full of tackle. I have two sheds that are full of tackle. Except for the basics such as fishin' line, I am done.

What's that? Doc Irv is donating money to the Adopt A Family program when folks order baits? Hmmm. Jeez. Well, I could use a few more Doc Irv custom-poured plastics. This past summer was hard on some of my favorite worms that I get from him. Hmmm.

Well, here we go again.

I have always stuck to the basics.  My jigs, spinnetbaits, tppwater and worms. I had enough to last for years.
I even held off on chatterbaits for years, until a friend showed me up with them.
So you can say I'm a quality type of guy.

I watch a guy on utube, FCP fishing, just because he doesn't use a bunch of stuff. He throws a top water mostly, then a jig, a texas rigged worm and a hair jig on Lanier. That's pretty much it, 365 days a year.  Another one who uses just the basics is Richard Gene, the fishing machine.

I'm in the same boat. Way too much tackle.  The "stock up" mentality is dangerous. I can go at least twenty years without purchasing a bait.

I completely empty my boat several times a year to do a deep clean.  I only put about half of the crap back in vowing to keep it that way.  Two months later it's all back in plus more crap that I have bought.....

I do the same as many of you and empty the boat of unused baits a couple times a year.  It always seems to creep back in.

Some companies make an effort to design baits to catch bass, but all make efforts to catch fisherman!

I do it because I wasn't able to do it when I was younger. Couldn't afford to do it then because of other responsibilities.

I don't often buy the latest new lures on the market, instead when I buy something new to me, often it's an older lure, or older baits that I couldn't afford years ago.  I do have some newer stuff too, but a lot more of the older lures.

Plus, frankly I like the experimenting part of fishing. If I can find them, I can usually catch something on what I have had success with. It may not be a bass, but that's OK. Then it's seeing what I can do with something I may not have experience with, like a new color bait or different brand or style topwater.

You all know I make lures, so I can make some that aren't necessarily what's on the market and that often becomes an experiment. I also know a lot of others folks who make all types of lures, and a lot of us have that same mentality, make something different and there's some very talented lure makers around.

Doc Irv was mentioned, and for as long as I've known him, which has been a lot of years, he's always had some baits that were a bit different, even if they weren't completely new in the design, his tweaks made them different. That's what I'm talking about, that personal touch and style.

The mass produced lure market, they worry about making sure what they produce will sell, so they're not stuck with them. The custom & small time lure makers, look for what the mass producers don't do, so then it boils down to trying what you like, and seeing if it will work for you.  I've yet to find a lure or bait that won't catch some fish, so then the experimenting with different stuff, becomes what the fishing is about, and not as much about what may or may not work, but how many will work to catch the same numbers or size.

The old saying about not leaving fish to find fish, that often applies to the lure you're catching on too. When it's producing, it's not easy to try something else, but again, I like doing that. Of course I have to find them first, just as anyone does.

To do that, you just have to be confident in what you tie on and keep casting it.  :)

I have the Cabela Advaced Angler bag. It holds (12) 3750 boxes, (2) 3600 boxes and (2) 3500 boxes. But I'm the one always carrying tackle for everyone. (Wife, kids, friends, people who want to try fishing) I have a small "Jump Bag" that I take (4) 3700 boxes with me depending on where I'm fishing for the day. Wife got me a subscription to Mystery Tackle Box Elite like 5yrs ago, and we never cancelled it. So I just keep getting random stuff. Some I keep, some I give away to friends and neighborhood kids who fish.
