Repaining a Beat up Shimano Curado

Anyone ever done this?  I have one that works great but is pretty beat up on the outside.  I would like to make it purty again. If anyone has a few tips I would appreciate it.

Is it aluminum?
If so, it can be sanded down and powder coated professionally.
I run one of the largest powder coating facilities in South Florida.
We have 40ft ovens!!!!!!!!!!
That can fit A LOT of Curados.

The older curado's have plastic composite composite sides. I don't know how they are doing it but I know folks are. I would imagine you would just need to sand it down to make it smooth again and then use a quality paint and go from there. I would tear it down completely and only paint the pieces that show on the out side.

I have a couple older ones that I keep around for parts, I reckon I need to play with this a bit

  I will play with it this weekend.  I have a couple of nice paints (primer color coat and clear topcoat) all picked out to work with and a couple different grits of sandpaper.  I will try and take some pics of the process and see how it goes.

Are you going to just use spray paint? You got me thinking that perhaps I should give my Trion casting reel a color make over, but I don't know if regular spray paint will work, and if a clear coat is necessary to protect it after painting.

I have a Pinnacle Lucille. That was beat up in a few spots where it had rubbed on the boat and been dropped. I used my Moms nails Polish and it was a perfect match. i got pics ill post them tomorrow

Since the parts are plastic, I would like to recomend that you fully remove the current / damaged paint and apply a primer designed for plastic. Then make sure your primer, final color coat and clear coat are all compatible.

If you are going to paint over the existing paint with a new color, the 2 paints may not be compatible and you could run into all kinds of problems.

Thanks for all the tips.  I plan on stripping them down as best I can and then using prime first. All paints I have are compatible and have been tested together.  I like!!

Krylon white primer,  Rust-oleum multi-colored textured paint (deep Forest) and   krylon crystal clear topcoat.

Those are some great custom reels, but 100 at the very least is way to much for me.  I would rather spend that money toward a new rod or reel.

So long as the primer is designed for plastics it should be OK. If not it may all peel off.

Thanks. It's a pflueger trion I have in mind. I think it has an al frame but I am not sure. I also need to muster up the courage. I can't paint were a darn, but then again, I didn't know jack about doing a split grip either.

Got the reel done this weekend, and all in all I am pretty satisfied. I did make the mistake of trying to put it together before it was completely dry and made a new rash of my own.
I used rust-oleum for plastic. Didn't need a primer but used it anyway, the main color was rust-oleum hammered metal green then I topped it off with a very light overspray of plasti-dip red which gave it almost a red appearance at different angles, but more importantly  gives me a much more secure grip on the reel.  Anyway, here are the pictures, sorry they weren't bettter.

I started off by taking the reel completely apart.


I then used a Sharpie to darken up the inner frame.  It's not perfect, but definitely better than I started.



I taped off what I could.  You can see I tried to save the Curado markings, but that went out the window.




I then sanded it down.  First I tried using  a dremel, but immediately found out that was much too powerful for this plastic.  I took off a little more than I wanted to, then I found a Ladies Nail tool that basically is a very low powered dremel and that worked much better.  I used that and hand sanded most of the reel with 220 grit sand paper then finished sanding with 600 grit.   I primered it with Rust-oleum for plastic in white.



The first coat of green, I used 2 coats on it.



I then did the red plasti-dip overspray.  This picture is from the same direction as the overspray so it looks much redder than it is. If I had taken a picture from a different angle, it would be more green, a neat affect.



I then put the reel back together. You can see where I messed up my paint job on the left edge of the reel.



I let it dry and should be able to fix that smudged area, but there you have it.  Over all I am pretty pleased with the repaint and am very pleased with the effect of the plasti-dip overspray.  It feels like I have a much better grip on the reel and the flip flop paint affect is kinda cool.

I've got some old crappy reels that I don't use anymore, I might do some practising on one of them.

I might be doing a couple more.  I want to add the plasti-dip to some of the other reels, As I really like the feel of it in my hand.  I have it in red and black and if I can find a source, it's available in a few other colors. the 4 shimano reels I have were all purchased used, and have some boat rash, except the Scorpion which is very clean.  Also the Rust-oleum hammered metal is an awesome paint and before I applied the second coat looked just like it was hammered.  The second coat I put on (not during the timeframe recommended on the can) took away from that effect.  I was supposed to spray it immediately or after 48 hours according to directions, but I did the the 2nd coat an hour later and messed the hammered look up.
