This fall I have been fishing smallmouth bass on various rivers in Wisconsin. In my opinion this is the best time of the year to target large river fish.  Some people might say spring is but I disagree. There is less boat traffic in the fall meaning more fish for me to try and catch. Fall also brings cooler water and puts the fish on high to feed. Also the changing of the leaves is fantastic to see in river systems. About a month ago I was on a large flowage for the first time ever for 4 days. This was for a tournament. The first two days were spent prefishing and checking out the lake. From my research done before I left I determined my plan of action was to target the rivers that feed in. I think there were 5-6 rivers that feed in so there was a lot of water to cover.  We only caught fish where two rivers merged into one. It was a blast over the four days. We caught some very nice fish all on Lucky Craft Sammy baits, no other top water bait would work. I have also visited several other river systems this fall and had a blast. There is still time left to get out and try for some nice smallmouth.
