How many of you guy and gals have installed some type of habitat? Tell us your stories involving habitat projects. What kind of results have you seen with natural vs. artificial cover. We have gathered lots of input from all types of fisherman and all types of fish and their preferred choice in materials. Let's here what you have seen work for you the best.

I know the DNR will put hundreds of pine trees in the lakes around here, every year after the hollidays they have a tree drive.

ya, the Christmas trees are great cover and seem to be used in just about every state. Can be bundled or sunk in containers standing upright. Guys say you should burn the needles off first cause they contain acids that the fish don't like.
Sure is better getting a few good years of fishing over these trees instead of only a few weeks for the holidays,eh?

In Michigan we are fined if we put any type of habitat real or artificial in any of the lakes. That is not to say we do not do it, we just can not get caught doing it!  ;)

That seems to be pretty common, It's in the books I think to keep clowns from dumping trash. I have yet to hear of a ticket or fine, lots of southern waters encourage habitat by fisherman. Typical, we here in the north seem to have to many rules when it comes to the outdoors, not like the west and south.

Every blown down limb, every blown down tree and anything else that I think want hurt my lake, gets put in.  I have a 3 acre pond behind the house and from the top it looks smooth and "perty"  ;D

All people say when they fish it or run around with a sonar is "dang" what all that crap??  My answer, "big mama's house"!

Gotta order me some of your products, love the WIDE design!!

Yeah I'm looking for something to add to my pond.  No pine trees for me but I do need some cover.

I like your way of thinking 500, more cover grows bigger fish, proven fact.

Wood is good as we say but we all know every day is different. Unlike PVC pipe, our material has a textured finish which naturally grabs algae and grows like crazy. No sanding or prep needed whatsoever.

PVC seems to excel in the heat of summer when the wood has warmed and the vinyl stays cool.

Here's the link to our videos on youtube to check out. We also have another site exclusively for information regarding habitat projects and information around the nation and beyond. Check them out to see how fish attractors are being used in every state in the nation.

Here's a few ideas guys have come up with for home made cover.

Lots of different options to utilize discarded but safe items for habitat.

Get involved in one of the many great groups working together to install and improve fishing by sinking additional cover.

We support the idea that a variety of different materials grouped together give fish the best choices and opportunities.

Add some wood, brush and PVC to pinpoint what density of cover preferred on any given day.

What is your chosen type of cribs to fish?

I like things that allow bait fish to hide. Not so much shad but small bluegill, crawfish, small bass. These things in my opinion draw larger fish close by or at least make the area a stopping grounds when it's time to feed. :-*

We've learned that it all begins with Bio film or Periphyton as the biologists call it.

This film attaches to the flat, rough surfaces and attracts algae and the food chain begins.

Bio film is the success story to the habitat projects in reservoirs like Havusu.

Our material grows bio film better than round PVC pipe and only 10% less than bamboo. (noted scientific study) PVC is used in aquaculture to grow algae and bigger, faster growth rates.

PVC pipe has a clear film on both the inside and outside to prevent algae growth, (why we sand it)

PVC removes no oxygen from the water as it decomposes like boo, wood, vegetation.

Biologists agree PVC is the preferred habitat substrate to grow fish food, industry is exploding.

Peepaw,

I must say - you're habitat looks great.  I really like the designs and especially the wide slats that cast shade.

The problem with sinking x-mas trees and wood - is # 1 it takes alot of weight to get it to sink,  # 2 it decomposes and doesn't last long.

Love the shallow water Fry cribs and the deeper water structures.  Good stuff.

I dumpster dive construction sites myself for items to sink.  It's a fun project during the winter when I can't fish.
