How many on here makes their own lures like jigs buzzbaits spinnerbaits etc?

Andrew

I make some spinner baits out of kits i buy at a local tackle shop..They turn out very nice as long as you use plummers lead...I only do this cause i cant find spinnerbaits heavy enough from the famous brand makers. I fish in some strong current alot and i need them more heavy to get down quicker in the current..

I make my own buzzbaits.  Drill out the blade and tune them with a little set up I built on a fan until they squeal like a pig.  That's a little trick I learned from a fishing partner ;).

Hey Cheese, I wonder who that partner might be. ;)

I'm sure you have a pretty good idea. ;D ;D

Yessir... I've made a "few" Buzzbaits....But haven't really felt the need to make any other kind of baits.....I'm a Clutz with paint so airbrushing anything would be certain disaster!!! Now I will modify spinnerbaits and a few other lures to suit my needs but that's about the extent of it for me. ;)

I make my own round head jigs, tube insert jigs, flippin' jigs, tie my own flies, and design hard baits (I don't construct the hard baits, but pass my suggestions along to those who do).

I haven't mad a lure yet ...but do plan on trying my hand at making

I make my own flippin jigs, the way we get bit off by Northern Pike and Pickerel ya can't afford to be paying 2.50 to 3.00 for one jig.

All fishermen are liars except you and me and sometimes i'm not to sure about you.

Only made one lure so far, took a spinner bait I found, took off the blades, changed the skirt to several thin strips of rabbit hair with the skin attached, added 3 red plastic balls with glass balls in between for rattle.  Never caught a fish on it, was uglier than a skeeter on the window of a Mack truck.  But, boy did it have some flare and action.    :roll2:

i make spinnerbaits and cedar crankbaits......i have made buzzbaits and poured jigs in the past....my order from Del-Mart should be in tomorrow...gonna start plastics this weekend! WOO HOO!!!

buzzinbass

Good luck with the plastics it's not all that hard I've done it a couple of times but not no expert at it

I make almost all of my buzzbaits, spinnerbaits, and jigs. Much cheaper that way and you can make any color combinations you want. Another thing I do is use only living rubber skirts on buzzbaits. I feel you get better action with the rubber as opposed to the silicone. But I do use silicone on spinnerbaits  and some jigs. I have a small piece of channel iron with a hole drilled the same size as the rivet. Put the rivet in the hold and pound them down with a small hammer, to get more surface area against the blade. But I usually break mine in by holding them out the truck window. Haven't tried the fan yet, although I had heard of it before. Also pour my own 1/8 oz. round jig heads. I use a lot of smoke grubs.

I first caught the lure crafting bug for the same reason......I wated a spinner bait in an 1/2 oz with small willow blades. I started making my own 2 years ago......graduated then to Buzz baits and jigs......and now I'm smitten by the challenge and creativity of pouring my own plastics.......

Somewhere along in there I started my own little ebay business.

I started making my own jigs after watching an episode of Bill Dance when he said you could catch bass on them year round.  Went to wal-mart and got sticker shock.  2.50 each is not a lot, but when your only making 3.50 an hour it's painful to lose one. Asked dad where grandpaws melting pot was, made a mold out of bondo, and used some hooks I found in the bottom of the tackle box and was "hooked". Found a do-it-mold ad in the back of an outdoor life magazine a few months later and all heck broke loose.  I've lost count of the molds I own, and have more lures than I could use in  life time.  I still love catching bass on my own creations.

I make a lot of my own stuff and have for years. Just recently is when I decided to begin selling some of it.

Just getting started. Buying things to paint and finish crankbaits and I want to be able to make jig skirts customized to my liking. Looks like if you wanted to make money at it you have to buy in volume and find someone who is willing to pay extra for your work.  It is great for making you think and be creative.

I'm addicted to tackle making! I've made most of my own for many years, and did so as a business for 15 years. I started out tying flies, then hair jigs, and rigs for saltwater fish, like Flounder, and eventually spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, jigging spoons, tail spinners, in-line spinners and other bass jigs of all types. I mold my own jig heads & sinkers too. I have about 300 molds, and tons of fly tying and tackle making stuff I've accumulated over the past 40 years. Although my own fishing is primarily for bass, panfish and some saltwater species, I've made tackle for everything from Bluegills to White Marlin at one time or another! ;)

It IS highly addicting!  But if you throw alot of a certain bait - whatever that might be, you can realize some pretty big savings.  With me it's soft plastics, I can't remember the last time I bought a pack.  And once you develop confidence with lures of your own making, that's pretty much all you'll want to throw.  But stay open to trying new baits -  adapt and learn new things.  Then start making those baits.   :)

Making and painting crankbaits take most of my time.
