New guy here. Haven't fished in a loooong time. Just bought an H2O Xpress Mayhem from Academy. On sale from $150 to $75. The guy working there said it was a good deal for a good reel. Any opinions on this reel? Thanks.

Sorry, I don't have the Mayhem, but do have a lot of Academy's branded merchandise.  I have a few of the original H20 Metal reels and they are going strong.  The H20 rods are well received, so I would be pretty confident that you got a good reel at a fantastic price IMO.

BTW, welcome to the site.

No clue on the reel.
Welcome, though.

They've been around a while. You may find this "Breaking down the Academy H20Express Mettle reel" Posted here in 2012. Don't know if the construction has changed much. -Jim

So the Mettle is the same as the Mayhem?

Princeton_Man

I thought they were all Mettle but I could be wrong.

I bought one and took it back after i couldn't get the sideplate back on right.

I opened up the demo one at the store and it was the same way.  The mettle i can open and close all day with no problems.

This post drew my interest and even after trying to research it a little, it's not clear to me who the manufacturer is. I see H20, Mettle, and Mayhem. Are Mettle and Mayhem manufacturers or models? Can someone clarify that?

Mettle and Mayhem are models.  H20 is the Academy's house brand.

Just finished spooling my new Mayhem 6.3/1 with line. Very smooth reel for 75$. Also ordered a Menace 7.9 to 1 ratio arriving today but now wish I had bought 2 Mayhems instead, very nice look and feel. Have had 3 Mettle reels(30$ on sale) for several years now and still going strong though I only use them sparingly throwing weightless baits.

I have the menace and mayhem. I've been using the menace for my quick trips and has been flawless. I bought the mayhem last week and it's a lot smoother than the mayhem. Same sale of course. I took both of them apart to clean them up and lubricate them. (I'm a clean them before anything could be a problem guy). Both reels have carbon fiber drags. The mayhem has a 3 washer carbon drag stack. They are constructed very well especially at their price point.

They sound like good reels, the H2O brand has had a reputation around here as being a good "diamond in the rough" brand.  I seem to always get more from them than what I pay for.

They are models. If I'm correct daiwa manufactures them.
