I'm thinkin' about a dedicated battery for my electronics... Anyone have any experience with Lithium batteries for marine applications? I reckon they need a special charger? Thanks in advance.

I've looked at the lithium smart battery. They do require a special charger. The chargers are no more costly than any top shelf onboard charger. The battery is much more costly but supposed to last much much longer as far as the number discharge/recharge cycles and the charge times are like two or three hours verses 8-10 hours. Not to mention they weigh about half of what an AGM battery weighs. All pretty big pluses. I'd sure try them if I could afford it.

If I could swing it, I'd give them a try.

ANY deep cycle battery will last longer and do a better job of they are fully discharged before re-charging. Batteries can and DO get a "memory" of where they've been before, and if you run a battery consistently say, half-discharged, then that's where it will want to stay. True story.

I'd say the same would be true of Lithium?

Why would money be a problem? This is FISHIN'.

Actually, if I'm not mistaken, Li-ion batteries advantage is the fact that they don't have 'memory'.
In fact, most manufactures say if you don't run them low they will last longer....cycle-discharge is usually how Li-ion battery life is rated.

Think all cell phones now use Li-Ion batteries.

Quick note, you don't have to 'trickle charge' them over winter....they actually don't have the Sulfate build up of traditional batteries...that's the purpose of the trckle charge.

But they also say not to charge them in temps of 32 degrees or lower.
So definitly store them indoors over winter......which is wise to do for any battery.

Have numerous buddies who use them and love them.

Oh another plus, they say, is the fact that thier discharge rate is lower/slower and usually lasts all day even while using troller and Sonar units A LOT.

Disclaimer;
I'm not a battery expert be any stretch.

It's only a problem when you don't have any.

Come to think of it, it can be a problem when you do have it too.  ~roflmao

Thank you sir.

Money. It's a sin. I decided a few years ago (after 2008) that I didn't care about $ any more. As long as the bills are paid and the family is taken care of, screw it. That's why my old beat up boat has new everything, Panoptix, and is gettin' Talons. And at least one Lithium battery to start with.
