Bud Kennedy

OK guys thanks.  I kinda thought it might be TNDiver.  He is kinda young.  I hope you old farts did not ruin respect for the site.

Yes, my mistake Bud, I'm the one in the MotherNature and Zip pic.

TNDiver

Yeah that's me in the green t-shirt and shorts.  And I am not that young as I am closer to 50 than 40.  Some days I feel a lot older, but there is ibuprofen and alcohol for those days!

For all those trying to keep up with my Ultrex issues, here's the latest.

I pulled the boat out this weekend and gave it a good scrubbing. We got rained on without the cover coming out of Tennessee and there's no way I was going to take it to my boat guy as dirty as it was. Once I was done cleaning I thought I'd test the TM, so I hit the power switch and it came on. I deployed the Ultrex and pressed on the switch and it spun up. Then I reached down and turned the speed control up on 10, it beeped and died.

Still not convinced it was water in the motor, I placed a box containing a spare trailer hub on the foot switch and went to the back. I tried twisting and puling on each of the battery cable clamps and got nothing. Then I did the same with the series jumper between the two batteries. All the clamps were tight. Then I pulled on the jumper itself and the Ultrex beeped and spun up wide open! I tried the clamps again and they wouldn't budge on the posts but pulling and moving the cable caused the Ultrex to beep and die again. I pulled the cable off and both the posts and clamps were clean.

I bought a new 19" 2/0 cable with lugs instead of post clamps and tied the batteries together using the stainless steel lugs. Since I have the crimping tool and 1/0 and 2/0 lugs I went ahead and replaced all of the lead clamps with copper lugs. Before crimping I filled the lugs with dielectric grease to prevent corrosion and used heat shrink. The Ultrex seems to be fine but, I still need to take it to the lake to be sure. The problem appears to have been either a short in that lead post on the battery or a short in that cable.

I sure wish I'd dug deeper while we were in Guntersville. If I hadn't jumped to the conclusion that the seal had failed on the Ultrex, the mechanic at Goosepond Marina would have probably looked at it and found the problem. Sorry Zippy... Our last hours on G as well as our visit to Chic should have been better.  ::)

Good to hear you found the problem Jim, appreciate the update. I'm still waiting to hear how Brad's situation is playing out.

Brad's insurance came through nicely for him. I'll leave it to him to post the details but, he was weighing all of his options when I heard from him.

Jim,
I had a great trip. The fishing wasn't good enough to be messed up. And Chic was a bust before we got there, I was getting too sick to really fish.
