How many of you just use braid with no leader for bass fishing?? Talked someone today that uses 30-40 power pro for all bass fishing (weightless senko, texas , jigs, crank, poppers, crankbait, chatterbait etc) and 50+ in real thick stuff for punchin.

Anyone else use just braid? I like the idea as it last longer, better sensitivity.

Me but I'll put on a florou leader fishing flukes. When fishing crank baits I'll soften the drag a little.

I use Power Pro for almost everything.  Mono for some cranking situations and when I'm fishing heavy rocks/shell bars.

i use braid for fishing anything, and i do not use a leader.  i will use different # tests depending on what i am fishing and how deep.  or, if fishing in a lot of wind, i will use a smaller line to help eliminate wind drag.

Yup, I'm also a Power Pro user and no leader. I do however, use fluoro for some techniques.

I use straight braid (no leaders) for everything except one particular crankbait situation where I use mono.

I have some new flouro and a couple of multi-polymer lines that haven't hit the market yet to play with next spring but I don't see them making me switch back from straight braid/no leader. It just works for me.

I don't use leaders with braid, (Sufix 832) and also use Yozuri Hybrid and have gone back to using some Ande mono on some of my spinning gear.

Like Bo, for the braid I use different test, and mostly for jigs. I use the Yozuri for crankbaits & jerkbaits, and the mono is more for panfishing, but I would use it too for light weight applications for bass.

I use straight Suffix 832 braid for everything except crankbaits where I use monofilament. Like others the test lb of braid depends on what I am fishing.

Braid is my primary line for 90% of my reels, and I'm a leader user for some applications.

twocold

I use braid for all applications sometimes a fluro leader but only for drop shot

What line size are you all using??
    1) dobyns FR735c with tatula150 7.3:1 has suffix 832 50lb, for flippin,froggin sometimes jig swimbait.

2)dobyns FR705cb w/Revo3 winch 5.4:1 currently has 12lb Trilene sensation. This setup will be used for all my treble hook lures until I get another rod. Crankbait, jerkbait, poppers, spybait, walkinbait etc

    3)dobyns SR734c w/Zillion sv tw 7.3:1 currently has 12lb seaguar invizx.

4)phenix feather 6'9" mh xf w/slx dc 7.2:1 currently has 14lb trilene xl. Will be used with mainly smaller single hook applications. Plastics, jigs, chatter, spinner

What size braid would you recommended for each setup?

I also have two spinning reel setups that I use for dropshot, wacky, ned, shacky. That I have some really cheap 6lb mono spooled on..

I only use a backing if the reel is not braid ready.

I'm set up like this:

Frogging: 50lbs PP (Power Pro)
Pitching/punching: 65lbs PP
Swimbaits, Swimjigs, T-rig's: 40-50lb PP, depending on the cover
Cranks, spinnerbaits: 30lb PP

Spinning Outfits: 20lb PP

I used to swear by leaders with braid but after reading what Bo thought about it along with several other folks here I tried using straight braid and won't go back, I didn't find any loss of bites. The only place I use a leader is on my dropshot, I like stretch in the rig. I do use mono but as a leader.

I also have two spinning reel setups that I use for dropshot, wacky, ned, shacky. That I have some really cheap 6lb mono spooled on..

1.) Id leave as is with Suffix 832 50lb unless I was really going into fish some really heavy stuff then I up mine to 65lb.
2.) Id also leave as is with 12lb Trilene sensation
3.) Id also leave as is with 12lb Seaguar Invizx but when it was time to respool it would get Suffix 832 30 or 40lb braid.
4.) Id also leave as is with 14lb trilene xl but when it was time to respool it would get Suffix 832 30 or 40lb braid.
I wouldn't waste the line on the reels if its good. I always try and conserve my $ so I can buy more tackle.  ;D

As for the two spinning reel setups you use for dropshot, wacky, ned, and shaky stuff I would again get Suffix 832 in 10 to 20lb test. I admit that I don't throw finesse baits though so I really don't have experience to say its optimal for these when using really light weight baits. Someone else may have a better answer based on their experience.

All of my braid these days I get in Hi-Vis Yellow or my new favorite color Neon Lime. I highly recommend them as a line watcher its very helpful and I feel has really added catches for me.

I only use braid for flipping and pitching thick veggies, and for frog fishing thick cover.  I use 100% floro when casting all plastics.  Because our water are very clear because of all the veggies, floro helps with increasing my bites on drop offs and open waters.  Floro is very sensitive, tough, and not as visible under water.  Braid would be OK in dirty and heavy stained waters, not found in my waters. :-*

Most pros will use fluorocarbon for worm fishing (casting a worm, not flipping/pitching). They all feel that they may get an extra bite or two by the end of the day. It was something that I noticed when working on magazine articles while interviewing or fishing with a pro. I always specifically asked them  because I thought it was interesting. Even the ones without a line sponsor (or in between line sponsorship) that I've delt with mentioned that they believe in getting an extra bite or two with f/c.

Well most pros have 20+ rods in their boats so they can afford to have many different configurations

I fish straight braid and out fish all of the people that I fish with, they all say I should fish flouro. It's silly listening to them try to justify their choices, while I keep setting hooks.

And getting a good hook set is paramount where I'm fishing, long casts get my bait to where the fish are, say 70 to 80 feet. Flouro acts like a rubber band. With braid I'm driving that hook home.

Hang ups are another problem for me with flouro, with braid I wrap line around my arm and give a good tug, bait comes free.  Flouro I have to walk ten feet and then the knot breaks = lost bait.

Top water I will at most tie on a three foot leader to help with fouling.

Older reels didn't have a way to tie off braid so when you spooled it without a backer it would spin on the spool. Different ways were brought out by users to eliminate it, putting a layer of tape down and using a backer. Most reels now have a way to tie it off so it doesn't spin on the spool.

Top Water Poppers (Small) 10 lb. ~ 15 lb. PP (with 10 lb. Mono leader)

Bait Casting :
Frogs : 50 lb. PP
Toads :  40 lb PP
Buzz Bait 40 lb. PP
Walking / Wake Baits : 30 lb. PP (with 15 lb. Mono leader)
Poppers (Large) 30 lb. PP (15 lb. Mono leader)
Whopper Plopper 130   40 lb. ~ 50 lb.  PP
Cranks : 30 lb. PP (with 10 lb. ~ 12 lb. FC leader)
Spinner Baits / Chatterbaits : 40 lb. PP (with 15 lb. 17 lb.  FC leader)
T-Rig Worms : 30 lb. PP (with 12 lb. ~ 15 lb. FC leader)
C-Rig Worms : 40 lb. PP (with 15 lb. ~ 17 lb. FC leader)

IMO those weights for the spinning set-ups are too light; the spider webs we encounter are a minimum of 20 lb

Hell... those spider webs have stopped a casting frog dead in its tracks.
