What is this?

This little silver thing is on the drivers side of the motor. The wire coming out of it goes toward the drivers cockpit. Pardon the stupid question, but what is this and what does it do? The reason I'm asking is the wire that goes to it got pinched and broken. I'm wondering if I need to fix it or if I can do without it.

Looks like a temperature probe that hooks up to the depth finder or surface temp gauge.

That would make sense. I didn't notice the water temp not working on any of my graphs, but I'll pay attention next time I'm out. It could be for an old unit the guy before me had on there too. I think he had an old Garmin unit before the current ones.

Look for a small silver dot on your current transducers. That is the temperature sensor for the unit that transducer is connected to.

Here is a pic of the transducer that is mounted on the boat. After a little research, this is the structure scan transducer for the Lowrance HDS8. There is not a transducer for the Helix that is on the console.
I'm guessing that one is mounted in the hull somewhere. So this must be the temp sensor for the Lowrance. I'll look for the water temp on that unit the next time I'm out, which may be a while. As long as I have it on one of the graphs, I can live without this one. I may try to splice some wire together this winter anyway. The wire that is broken actually has 3 small wires inside the casing.

The silver is definitely a external Lowrance temp sensor. The long black one is a side/down transducer. Some of the transducers have a small temp probe in them that can be used but you'll have to find that inside the units system panel.

The transducer shown has a built in temp sensor. If the silver one is a temp sensor it's for a much older unit.
