Sure, you can buy waterproof maps, but what if the only map of a lake you have isn't waterproof?

Simple fix...cover your map with clear contact paper, cut the contact paper larger than your map - approximately 1/4" larger on all sides - you'll need two pieces of contact paper; don't try to do the entire map at once, peel back a couple inches of the backing material leaving the contact paper exposed and lay the back side of the map down onto it making good contact and removing as many bubbles as possible...continue peeling back the backing and adhereing the map until the entire map is floating like an island on top of the contact paper; now, repeat the process on the front side of the map, this time adhering the contact paper to the map so you can make sure not to get any significant bubbles on the front of your map.

Here's the plus to waterproofing your maps this way - when you're out on the lake for an extended trip, or plan to return to this particular lake several times throughout the cours of the year you can make notations on your map with a grease pencil (which can be purchased at your local hardware store [china marker]). When the notations are no longer needed or have become invalid, simply take a rag and rub them off.  ;D

Good tip Fish, I do that to large items alot.

When waterproofing smaller items like licenses, you can use clear packing tape.

I didn't suggest licenses, because in some states, Indiana for one, that's illegal...check with your state before putting that lamination on a license.
