Great Bay Discovery Center Seeks Additional Volunteers

Greenland, NH – The Great Bay Discovery Center (GBDC) is looking for individuals with an interest in the Great Bay Estuary ecosystem, local cultural history, and engaging with the public of all ages.

GBDC will hold its annual exhibit room training for volunteers on April 13. The training runs from 9:00 a.m.–11:30 a.m. and is for anyone who is interested in staffing the exhibit room in the Discovery Center.

This training session will prepare volunteers to interact with visitors and interpret the estuary discovery tank, which houses flounder, horseshoe crabs, and more. The instruction will provide a foundation for teaching the public about the Great Bay Estuary. GBDC is open May through October, Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. Volunteer shifts are scheduled from 10:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m.–4:00 p.m. on those days.

Volunteers sign up for dates that are suitable for them. The training session is free with refreshments provided.

On April 18, GBDC will hold its spring educator training at 89 Depot Road in Greenland, NH. The training runs from 9 a.m.–4:30 p.m. and includes a complete run through of the actual school programming offered from April through June to students throughout the Seacoast Region and beyond.

The training will prepare volunteer educators for teaching small groups of schoolchildren about the natural history of the Great Bay Estuary, including the wild plants and animals that live there. Once trained, educators will lead a variety of lessons throughout the grounds. A favorite of students is the shorefront exploration where prehistoric horseshoe crabs can often be found. Students create "estuary soup" in a simulated cooking class and travel the quarter-mile boardwalk past towering trees, vernal pools, and into the salt marsh. Finally, a visit to the GBDC's discovery tank lets students enjoy a hands-on experience while learning about estuary creatures such as crabs, flounder, eels, mud snails, and more.

All spring 2023 school programs are held mornings only during late-April, May, and June and run about 2.5 hours each. Most of the classes attending the program are in grades one through five. Volunteers sign up for dates that are suitable for them. The training session is free, with snacks, lunch, and all teaching materials provided.

The Great Bay Discovery Center is managed by the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department (NHFG) and is the education headquarters for the Great Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, a state and federal partnership between NHFG and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
