smith lake in AL?

that was the thought.

but having asked and having no responses... not sure that reverting to Guntersville might not be best play.

im embarrased to say i have not been there yet :(  its only about an hour and a half.  but when gunt is right across the street and below the G dam is about 8 minutes to a dicey ramp and 20 to a good one its kinda hard to go anywhere else

I can commit with 75% certainty that I can be there if it happens.  I have never fished Westpoint lake,  so i really can't comment on it,  but Guntersville and Eufaula are always winners.  Chickamauga might be another good option.

Depending upon how many decide to go,  accommodations become more of an issue on some lakes since we will all want to stay together,  so that has to be considered.  Guntersville is not much of a problem in that regard if we plan ahead far enough.

Jim (P_M) Toccoa, GA is 5 hours south of you.  You could stay overnight at my house if that works for you.

Brad
Thanks, Brad. Guntersville is about 5.5 hours drive for me. The time zone screws with me a little, but I can usually handle that solo. I leave about 0500 EDT and arrive at Waterfront about 12:00. Usually make a fuel/pit stop about halfway and fuel up at Waterfront before launching and fishing a little while before heading to cabin. The drive back tacks that hour back on for my drive home. I know it's all in the head, but it screws with me.

Zippy and I hit Chic on the way back from our last rally. Those cypress knees had me foaming at the mouth. We caught a couple, but Zippy was getting a pretty nasty cold/flu, so we had to pull out after about an hour. Chic has produced some record fish it's actually a little closer to me. But that makes it a little farther for our brothers deeper in the South.

I am good with $5 gas,  well not good with it,  but going anyway....

Whatever lake you guys decide on is OK by me.  Depending upon who all is interested,  we can pick something relatively central to everyone.

I'm good with wherever the group decides but the accommodations will have to be on the nicer side if mama is coming.  She did a Grape Hammock weekend when we were dating and still married me...I don't want to push my luck again.

Let's get it narrowed down to a hard date and location by May 1 so reservations can be made.

We had a couple of homes at our last Guntersville rally. Most of us stayed in a larger two-story that was beautiful. It had a master bed/bath downstairs, upstairs had two bedrooms, on with a queen bed, the other with 4 bunks, and separate, shower, toilet, sink. The common area downstairs was huge, large dining area, breakfast bar, and kitchen. We have some pics somewhere. Mike and Laurie brought their grand kids and stayed in a nearby house across from us, I don't know how their place rated, but overall, I'd give our place a 10.

The one group of cabins we rented many times were mighty nice. The one cabin on the far end had a real nice honeymoon suite with a separate bath. I'd say that every place we've ever stayed at Big G has been on the nicer side, but there are much more luxurious rentals there including places on the water. After stopping at Chic on our way back form the last rally, I briefly looked at some rentals there, thinking Zippy and I would make a quick return trip at some point, from the pics at that time, they looked mighty nice too. Every place we've ever stayed has been pretty darn nice.

Jim, I think the places we used to rent have been sold.  If I understand correctly the cabins down by waterfront are still available for rent.  I think that is where you stayed during the very first rally if I recall.

If my wife comes the Bathroom facilities are of utmost importance.

You are correct, Bud. In fact, at that time there were only I think three cabins at Waterfront. It was awesome being right across from the ramps. Back then, all of the cabins and the houses were all owned by Sandy. After her husband passed unexpectedly, she couldn't keep up with everything.

Where are we at on this?  I'm serious about heading way out East for this, but only if I have a backseat, place to stay and nearby airport.  I just added my crappie club weekend event the weekend of October 5-9, so I can't make it that weekend, but every other weekend in October is open at the moment...

Keep this thread updated, so I don't book something over it....

FD

Fine.  I'll decide.

The Rally is October 20-22.

Alf -  you will have a back seat.

PM - can you check and see if those cabins on the G are available that weekend?  And send me the location.

2 of the nearest airports:  Huntsville which is the closest.  Birmingham which is about an hour.  -- most airlines at both-- american, delta, united.

some flew into ATL and were picked up in the way in years past.  Thats a 6+ hour roundtrip for me so probably find someone along the way should you choose to fly into ATL

I can pick you up if you want in Hunstville or Birmingham

and October 20 - 22 should be a good weekend, historically speaking.  Frog, punch, start of A-Rig, chatter, squarebill, buzzbait, plopper can all be in play around then

I called Connie (Lakeland Properties) and spoke to her helper. They have as many as 7 cabins in Kudzu Cove, the largest is a 4br. She or Connie will be calling me back with what's available. That might be where we stayed at our last rally.
I also called Waterfront Cabins, everything across from the Waterfront ramp is available. There are about 6 cabins there total, they sleep 6, and are $150/night. With cleaning fees and taxes two cabins would be around $380. If we act quickly, those are very convenient. We need commitments so we know how many cabins we want. As usual, I'll probably arrive a day early, if anyone wants to join me. It's worth an extra days rental after driving that far.

Lakeland Properties only has two houses available. Combined they'll sleep about a dozen.

Here is a link for the waterfront bay cabins.  This may answer some of your questions.

That was my option :)  I think that, for the value and proximity those are probably the best.  (the ones across the street).

I did like the ones that everyone stayed at the last time, but there was not enough boat coverage IMO.  The ones across the street from waterfront ramp have a nice place to drive your boat behind the cabins and and under the boatport.  Each one has a plug.  The downside to 2/3 (the ones across the water and the ones on columbus lane by mill creek are that they are too small for everyone, but after a day on the water we all sit on a porch and shoot the BS anyway, which we would be doing on one big porch at the bigger house).

I have not personally seen the other one Jim mentioned that I can remember.  I have however, stayed at one up in Mink creek which was nice for 5-6 guys.  Problem there was the boatslip barely fit my phoenix and an 18 foot triton, plus the water was 18 inches lower which made it a MFR to take off in the morning.

if it were me (without looking at the other Jim hasnt mentioned) I would go in this order:
1. ones across from waterfront
2. columbus city ones (more secluded)
3.  the last set of cabins over by Buck Island.

I think the one Jim might be talking about is just up (like 1500 feet from the waterfront cabins) -- have to go take a look after I get home.

the other option is to find one on the water with a big slip/boathouse -- but if it rains, someone's bilge is gonna be running.  Power can be a problem possibly as well with that setup.

I agree with Joe, the Waterfront cabins are great, also a great location. Waterfront ramps are right across the road. The ramps fill up every day and it's nice to be there first. Also nice to be able to be the last ones off and still be home in time for dinner... or even do a little night fishing. It's like having the dock in our front yard.
I never found who owns those cabins off Columbus. Connie sold them, but I wasn't able to talk to her. Waterfront doesn't own them.
