Everyone remembers where they were when this happened.

I had left my college biology class and was headed back to the subdivision where I was doing construction work at the time. All of us were listening to the news on the work truck radio when we saw Air Force One fly over headed to Barksdale.

I was driving from Albuquerque to Grants listening on the radio.  When I got to the office I was working with that day, everyone was a ghost when I walked in.  Surreal...

We will never forget....

In late '99 I was working for a mutual fund company. They wanted to send me to classes to become a stock broker and head up their new offices in the Twin Towers.

My son wasn't quite 2 years old at the time and my wife said no way was she raising her son in Manhattan.

So I turned down the offer.

If I had accepted I would have been on the upper floors of the North tower on 9/11 when the plane hit.

I was on my way to Asheville, NC to visit with customers for a couple of days when I heard about it on the car radio.  Pulled into a Wilco truck stop to get some  coffee and sat there for a couple hours watching it on TV.  I continued on to Asheville and just as I arrived there I got a call of my customers that they had to cancel the meetings due to the events of the day.  I had reservations at a hotel and they asked me if I could find another place to stay as they had a lot of folks arriving at the airport due to the grounding of air travel.  I was able to get a room at the Cherokee Casino not too far from there so I went there and had a good meal and sat in my room watching tv.  I did hit the casino floor for a bit but my heart was not in it.  Left early the next morning and headed back to Myrtle Beach for the next couple of weeks.  It seems unreal that it was 22 years ago.  The day is still so fresh in my mind.

I don't know you and have never met you, but as a fellow fisherman who appreciates your contributions here, I'm quite happy for you, your family, and my fellow UB members, that you didn't take that job!

Sitting in my office at the agency and watching over 136 analysts. I had two tv on in my office during the day. One set to Fox News and the other to CNN. I saw the plane hit the first tower, realized what was happening and let my people come in small groups to my office. That day started over 3 years of 24/7 for me. Later, I went outside to the parade ground, looked up and for the first time, there were no planes or contrails in the air. An eerie feeling in a Metro area with hub airfields, major Air Force Command, numerous commercial fields and NG/Reserve bases.

I was at the Xerox Training Compound in Leesburg, VA. attending a (B.O.S.S. Conference) Better Opportunity for Single Soldiers with my fellow Command Sergeant Majors from across the Army Command.  We brought our enlisted soldiers representatives to the week long conference.  We had just finished having breakfast in the main dining hall when the 2nd plane flew into the 2nd tower.

One of the neat things reference this conference was we had tours set up at the Pentagon, Washington, DC  for the soldiers to attend.  I was scheduled to take a group tour to the Pentagon.  Needless to say that tour didn't happen.  We instead went over to Winchester, VA and donated blood.

Our conference was over with on Thursday night we flew back to Anchorage, Alaska out of Dulles Airport on Friday morning.  It was an eerie unreal feeling being at the airport and seeing Armed Soldiers with dogs all over the place.  It's not something you expected to see in a U.S. airport.

As many have said --- "Never Forget"

I was a flight line superintendent on the Barksdale AFB flight line. We were in the middle of a nuclear weapons exercise in which we were loading every bomber we have with nuclear weapons as fast as we could. Lots more behind the scenes but that's the main idea, just a giant practice exercise.

I was working from 7 at night to 7 in the morning. After I gave turn-over to the oncoming shift and got done BS'ing for the morning, I was headed out the door when the news hit the tv that the first plane had struck the tower. I stood in amazement, how could traffic control allow this to happen. It didn't take but a second to realize what was happening. I lived 4 minutes from work so I headed home and didn't sleep for 3 days. Once back to work, the teams already had the nuc's off and the conventional weapons on and we were just waiting for orders from the man that was supposed to be a mile deep here on my very base.

Nope I didn't get to see the president but honestly that was the last thing on my mind, I just wanted to make sure my name was first on the deployment list to go get these "woops"s.
