Been using my wife's 4runner for towing the boat. When I'm boating my son for tournaments, she's without a vehicle basically, because she hates to drive my jeep (short wheel-base, lifted, 35" tires). It has a really small tow capacity because of the wheel base and I don't wheel anymore, so as much as I love my jeep, it's probably best to sell it and get something better to tow with and let her have her 4runner back on tournament weekends.

We sometimes have to go long distances for championship tournaments that are out of state, so it needs to be up to long hauls and be able to accommodate luggage and fishing gear.

I'm looking at used options and cannot make my mind up as to what would be the best vehicle.

Main questions I've been wrestling with:
Truck vs SUV?
Diesel vs gas?
If gas, are the 6 cyl turbo trucks up to hauling long distances?

Also trying to decide how badly I need 4WD. I've never had a situation where I really needed it on a boat ramp, but I could see it being a potentiality.

If you were trying to buy a used tow rig, what would you want?

I would sell the jeep and look for an SUV / Pickup truck type vehicle > Tahoe style or a full size pickup (4 doors).  Your brand that you like  ;)    I'd like Silverado's or GMC Sierra just my thoughts.  I'm a General Motors Guys  ;)

You'll have plenty of leg room and some storage behind the second row of seats in the Tahoe.  With a pickup truck you could put on a tunnel cover or go with a camper shell.   And "Yes" get it with 4 wheel drive.  And fore sure get it with a GAS engine.  Diesel fuel is expensive to start with and the maintenance bill to have repairs made is a headache within itself.  Don't ask me how I know this  :surrender:  ^-^

Side note here reference diesels.  We just had the 3rd Turbo Charger replaced in my daughters 2009 RAM  2500 diesel.  The cost of the Turbo Charger alone was $4,000.00 dollars.

Good luck with getting that new tow vehicle.  Keep us updated and of course take plenty of pictures.
