Quick tip for building more effective jig skirts: Don't just mix tab colors randomly. Layer them deliberately to create specific, realistic effects.

Think about natural forage. A crawfish isn't one solid color. It often has a darker back and a lighter belly. You can mimic this by layering tabs strategically before banding/tying:

  • Base/Belly Layer: Start with your lighter underside color (e.g., light green pumpkin, tan).
  • Mid Layer: Add your main body color (e.g., standard green pumpkin, brown).
  • Top/Back Layer: Finish with your darkest color (e.g., dark green pumpkin, black).

When you band this layered stack, the colors remain somewhat stratified, giving the skirt a more natural top/bottom contrast in the water versus a uniform mix. The same principle applies to mimicking baitfish – layer pearl/white on the bottom, main color in the middle, darker back color on top.

It requires slightly more thought during assembly than just grabbing tabs, but the resulting depth and realism can make a difference, especially in clearer water conditions. Control the color placement; don't leave it to chance.
