I dont have a boat.  well, not a big one.  I have a kayak.  I now have the bug to take a swing at fishing in the Pacific Ocean.  I already headed out into the bay after a Halibut.  no luck catching a keeper, but according to the bait shop, they should be in Tomales Bay soon.  the waves and wind were epic.  but I learned the capabilities of my kayak.  I kept it light, lowered the seat to the lowest position and just went for it.  it was a "call me Ishmael" moment.  I hoped to narrate a successful ocean water catch soon.  I felt like I have my white whale...beyond the double digit bass.  hahah..

I bought a big swimbait rod with a 300 series reel, lead weights that look like cannon balls (imagine a 6 oz, dropshot weight) , big balloon wheels so I can drag my kayak down a sandy beach.  I wore a dry suit I bought and never used.

BONUS!!  I didnt get seasick. hahahha

buying some used gear, I have met guys willing to take me out and show me the ropes on how to catch rockfish.  we are simply waiting for rookie level weather conditions.  :D.

Good luck!

Just keep on the flotation device just incase, and watch out for sharks and whales.

I've head of guys out in the Gulf catching fish so big that they had to lash them to the Kayak and paddle them in that way.  I have no idea how they do that, so just be careful.

I can't fathom them paddling out past the 5 mile marker into international waters, but many go that far and farther.

100%.  I never go out on any water without it.  I've had to pull my truck over to take it off after forgetting I was still wearing it.  I am very accustomed to having it on, and the discomfort is in the most distant part of my brain.  :D

~cf That's how you tackle a new fishery, Hobious. Respect the jump to the salt from a kayak. Your gear prep is spot-on; that's half the battle won right there. Connecting with experienced locals is the best shortcut there is and will shave years off your learning curve. Looking forward to seeing the report and the pictures.

I fished in my buddies ocean boat with a Filipino guy named Rocky that had caught 72 halibut out of his kayak last year!  And the year wasn't over yet.  Good luck with the rock fish, make sure you carry a bat to club the big ones!  And don't lip a Ling cod!
I knew I shoulda re-tied!!
