Leavenworth has pretty good fishing. There are some 6lb Largemouth bass and Channel catfish at good sizes of 3lbs.
Crappie are always there along with some 20lb Common carp.

I use leeches and other livebait. I haven't caught one fish on a jig yet, even though i have had many bites. Its suppost to be the best lure to use, this time of year. Bass anglers say its one of the hardest lures to master. When you use a jig, Do you set the hook as soon as the fish picks up the jig? or wait 5 seconds for the fish to hook its self?

It's hard because there are so many dang ways to fish it.  SO if you are just learning and hear folks talk about fishing a jig, you don't know to ask if they were swimming it, hopping it, dead sticking, flipping it or what.  Knowing someone is catching fish on jigs is just a small part of the equation.

The hook set is dependint on how the fish are hitting it and the anglers preference.

Generally I'll set the hook as soon as I feel anything, a tap, tug or if I watch the line move off or jump.  Sometimes when I drag a jig along the bottom I have to wait to feel the weight of the fish before setting the hook because they will pick up the jig and chop it one good time and then spit it out.  Bass will do this with crawfish to kill it and then sit back and make sure it's dead before going back to eat it.  So when I find after a few swings but no hook-ups if I just let them thump it and then put pressure on the line with my finger I can feel when they pick it back up and set the hook on them.

Another thing to look at if you are having trouble with the hook set is to look at your rod and line.  A lot of jigs have a big thick hook and it will take more power from you to bury it in their mouths.  If your line has a lot of stretch, or the rod is not stiff enough or even if your drag is set to soft all of those could be effecting your ability to bring a fish to the boat!

Good luck and don't give up on jigs,,, some very big fish have fallen to that lure over the years.

Thanks fogy for the tips, I believe I'm yanking the jig out of the fishes mouth, when I try to set the hook. So next time I'll gave the fish more time, then  set the hook. 8)
