I am strictly a bait caster person, but I see so many people using both. If one uses both what circumstances would they use different reels?

i use spinning for finesse and light lures

Exactly- you can cast those light, finesse lures a mile with a spinning reel. I don't spend nearly as much on a spinning outfit as I do on a baitcasting though. You can get a fairly decent spinning combo for around $90 and not have any problems with it. They're not as complex or high maintenance as baitcasters. ;)

I used to be 100% spinning, but now I use baitcasting 95% of the time. I still use my spinning outfit mainly for finesse stuff as mentioned already.

A good sized bass feels great on a light weight spinning rod and reel.

I have been a diehard spinning tackle man all my life.  When I go fishing with a good friend who uses baitcasting stuff exclusively, he doesn't do any better than I do when I use my spinning tackle.

Paul I'm with you and use spinning tackle all the time. I didn't even have but one cheep low end baitcaster which I used for Walleye fishing in Canada but now I have a Johnny Morris Elete baitcaster I won so I'm going to give it a shot but will more than likley still use my spinning gear most of the time.

I always used spinning tackle for ocean fishing growing up.
Growing up around golf coarses I was introduced to the Zebco push button reel and then graduated to the Shimano Gold Baitcaster Limited Edition back in the 80's.
I have exclusively been a baitcaster guy ever since.

With that said, I will be purchasing a Spinning Outfit for finesse only applications. I'd like to give it a try!!!!

the only time I use spinning is for drop shotting, shaky head, and throwing a shad rap.

One thing I hate is the line twist when fishing the drop shot.

Creel Limit Zero

Weightless senko goes on the spinning combo.  You can skip that thing a mile up and under the docks.  Only other thing I use spinning for is drop shot in deep water.  Not a go to technique so I rarely use a spinning rod anymore...

Thanks for the input. Best I can tell the spinning advantage is in the finesse area such as worms, tube, drop shots, etc...... I have 2 diawa viento that i use for worm and light jigging, I wouldn't trade my twitchin' bars for nothing. I think I'll continue with my exclusive bait casters, thanks for info.

Benthook120

I probably posting too late but I do try to use both types throughout the year just to keep proficient with the different techniques. There's just too many options of baits and techniques out now to limit yourself to just one style of reel. The hardest thing to teach kids wanting to learn fishing is how to remove those limitations and find what works best for them, and then grow with those changes as they are ready to learn something new, like flipping, pitching, etc. I see so many get discouraged. I guess my point is to keep the options open when it comes to fishing, especially for kids. Thats why Zebco is still in business.
If you give history the chance then chances are good that history will repeat itself. So pay attention to your fishing because the first one you caught was because you did something they liked!

I have both the Megaforce and the Vienta. If you have the megaforce you have realy got to try the Viento. It's 10 times smoother and way outperforms the megaforce, also not quite as fast of a retrive on the Vienta.

Plugger

Spinning reels on 1/4 oz crank baits or less, worms less than 3/16 oz and any lure than I can not accurately cast.  Bait caster on everything else.  Also 10 lbs or less line on spinning tackle.  Bubba line on bait casters.

I only have the Megaforce and I'm really happy with it, so it looks like I'll be buying a Vienta next  ;D ;D Thanks RJ.

i use spinning all the time. just bought a baitcaster gonna try it this year, but i'll still use my spinning for lighter lures 1/16,1/8,1/4 oz, finese, and weightless plastics. i got the baitcaster because i bought swimbaits and lures that are alot heavier than i'm used to throwing, a lot of my friends have told me there better for these lures.

jimotis02

I hated my spinning reel at first. Then i learned how to use it. I use it primarily for the stuff that I am going to drag across the bottom like jigs, shaky heads, spinner baits, c-rigs, and texas rigs. I also found that i really like pitching with my spinning rig. I just about use my baitcasters strictly for crankbaits and jerkbaits.

I use baitcastering equipment when I'm running-n-gunning.  When I'm fishing fast with heavier & bulkier lures.

When I need to slow down and pick apart a concentrated area where I need a smaller profile lure to trigger a strike...I go to my spinning equipment.

Overall...casters for heavier situations...spinning for lighter situations.

Not necessary always true though.  I have fishing partners who use only spinning equipment in all conditions we're faced with...they just need to beef up their equipment a bit.

Jeepguy2007

I use spin cast for lighter lures as well as when I crappie fish. all other times i use baitcasters

I thought I would chime in on this one as well, since I've been practicing with my first baitcaster (haven't actually fished with it yet...) and there might be other people who have been thinking about trying one out. My advice:  DO IT!!!

I've practiced two days, maybe 150-200 casts total and I already feel more accurate with my baitcaster, and I am able to cast with the breaks turned way down without getting many if any birdsnests. I can see how it would be difficult to cast lighter lures, but for larger stuff (spinnerbaits, crankbaits, etc) the baitcaster def. seems like it will have a place for me!
