My dad has a 05 640lx with a 46lb motorguide, my question is can i put a bigger lb thrust on, and has anybody done it, its ok if your just fishin for a few hours but ive been using it in out club tourny and sometimes by the end it goes out, faster if theres wind. thought maybe a 65lb would be good..any ideas

My 640 came with the same TM & I replaced it with a 55 but it was still only 12 volts.  I ended up putting in a 2nd battery running them together so I had the weight of an extra battery.  Hind sight I should have went with a 24 volt.

I think you would be fine with it, you will have to watch your load as that battery takes up weight for gear and I did end up having to use a fin on my 75hp motor to help with the hole shot.

Good luck

I used to own a 12v Motor Guide salt water motor that gave me the same problem.  It was a 55lb thrust Riptide and would usually drain the juice by about noon, sooner if there was a good breeze blowing, lots of vegetation to hack through, etc.  When it came time to replace the batteries I decided to shell out the extra $$ and go with an Optima AGM battery instead of a normal wet cell.  After two boats and who knows how much spent on different toys, accesories, and so on.....that was the BEST money I've spent!  I could troll all day in any conditions with that battery and it never discharged more than 2/3 of the way.  Before buying a new motor you may want to try getting one of those batteries.  Even if it doesn't give you the performance you want, you can still use it with another motor later on.

I've got a 45lb TM (12V) on my 640, and the idea of putting a 24v in instead of the 12v occured to me, but would I need to change any of the wiring, or could I just put a 24v in, get a 24v TM and plug it in?

If thats a dumb question, my apologies  ~b~ More of them to come in the very near future!  ;D

My Nitro plug up front is made for both 12 or 24. It says that on the little plug panel. But you will have to change the wiring on plug. Mine is 12v like yours and when I do up grade it will be to a 24v. I see the extra orange wire (unused) next to the red hot wire in the battery compartment. I assume it was for the 24v plug. Not positive though. I have the 55lb thrust and want more too! I'd go 65lb or even bigger on my next upgrade. rather have too much then to little  lo
