well its probably not so much the cable modem, unless i dont have it hooked up right, but i uninstalled AOL cause i want to go with someone else, but im just not sure what thu heck im doing lol with cable modem you dont need a dial up right? i tried using MSN but it kept trying to get a dial tone and wouldnt work? im thinking about getting the geek squad to come set it up for me...all i want do is check UB when im at home? lol i dont live to far from mother N im hoping i can talk her in to coming to help.

Not sure what windows your using but some will find the cable, wireless on it's own and others you have to tell it what to use when you want to connect.

With cable you should be connected all the time so when you open explorer it just goes to whatever page you have set up; sounds like when you open explorer that program is trying to use the old settings to dial in to connect you.

Look under connections under the start botton and when you find the cable connection right click on it and make it the defalt connection. Also make sure it is connected while your in there.  You will have to play with it some to get it set up, but it's not that bad.

If you're using a cable modem you def shouldn't be trying to dial up, you should have a cable from your cable modem to your pc, either a USB cable or a cat5 ethernet cable, if it's USB i can't remember the setup for it, but it should come with the modem, if it's cat5 you should be connecting to your lan card on your pc, if you're using xp go to start then right click on network connections, if you don't see that option go to start click contorl panel, depending on how your view is set up for category view click on network and internet connections, then click on network connections, that should show you what you have available already, one should say Local Area Connection, that is the one you want to use if you're using your ethernet card.  It's really hard to walk someone thru this on the forum, I'm about to head out but if you're still having trouble this evening pm your number and i can try to walk you through it on the phone.  that goes for any UB'ers that have tech trouble, i'm not the expert but i do okay.

Thanks for all the info. i need to get a book or something with all the tech names, cause i didnt know what the heck a default is or what it does. will play with it when i get home..

one thing that works here is after you let it know to using a modem then unplug the modem and turn off the computer for a minute and then plug them in again. do the modem first them turn on the computer, some time it needs to update the system to work right.

see i didnt know you had to do all that.

Railroader, open Internet Explorer, Click on Tools, Click on Internet Options, then click on Connections.  Click on Lan Settings, What do you have it set to?  You should have it checked on Automatically check connections.  This is what you want.  If you are going from dial up, you probably have that checked for dial up, and not for Local Area Network.

Eric L.

dude seriously don't pay someone to do that, let me know and i'll come out, as long as it's not a service provider issue i should be able to take care of this.  I'm pretty sure the geek squad and the like charge up to $50 to just tell you what you need to do , a network install can run up to $160.

yeah, you can also call up the cable company and have them walk you through it.  That should be free too, I know I've called Comcast with issues before and they looked at all kinds of things by telling me where to go and click, and that solved the issue after a while on the phone...

Do what CRL said but also make sure dial default connection isn't selected on that first page. Also you may have to call your ISP to give them the MAC address of the cable modem. I had to with COX.

Railroader

They have have the mac address, i called them last night and she said everything looked to be ok, but we had storms come thur and the internet was down so there was nothing they could do, so it sounds to me that the modem and everything on there end is working, just need to get the computer set up. i talked to laurie last night as well and she helped  a little, but when your a computer dummy im sure it was nerve racking. maybe when i put the cable modem CD in im not doing somthing right?

Pferox

When I went from dial up to Verizon DSL, I ran into some problems.
I don't know if it is like that now, but back then you had to run the CD, THEN hook up the modem when the CD told you to do so.
After installation, I had to go back and walk through the help desk to configure the modem because it was set differently for some reason.
After a long discussion we found out that I got an old CD, but without the programs on the CD, I couldn't configure anything.

Best way to do this is to go through each step one at a time, making sure you do every little thing the instructions tell you to. After it all clicks together, you will do the DUH thing and won't have another worry.

well i spoke to the ISP last night and she tried walking me thru, but i could tell she was getting upset lol, but when i turn the computer on, hit start, hit internet explorer, it tries to go to dial up, im thinking i didnt do something right with the modem CD, where im living now there is a computer shop about 3 blocks away, im thinking i will go talk with them and see whats happens, but everybody i talk to on the phone gets frustrated with me lol i hate computers.... :st:)

Are you online at work right now or at home?  When you are at home Click Tools, Internet Options, Connections, what does that say there?

Railroader

i cant remember? i got a blackberry so i will get online with it when i get home, and maybe someone can walk me thru. i need to make sure the computer and the modem are working together.

AOL is still in business?

JrFreak

Sounds like you need to get into your network connections and delete the one that was set up for AOL. Then create a new one for the cable line.

Omg. I just noticed this topic was in 2008. Haha
