I took the boat out yesterday (Sunday). I planned on fishing a small lake not too far from home, but when I got there, there were several carp fishermen camped out near the ramp. I then had to drive another hour to my second choice lake. I got there at 9:00am and the sun was already high and bright with no clouds in the sky. There was also no wind at all and the lake looked like a mirror. It turned out that the weather stay like that for the whole day.

I hate fishing in strong winds, but fishing in "no wind" is even worse. It makes for a comfortable day on the water, but the fish just don't bite, especially with the cold water temps. The water temps were between 43 and 47 throughout the day.

Fortunately, I did finally manage to catch a fish to avoid a skunk. It was about 13 inches and it took my SureCatch jerkbait as I slowly jerked it over the top of a channel hump with some sunken trees near by. I did get one more bite on a Neko rig but I didn't connect.

Steve,

Thanks for sharing the fishing trip and report with us.
Some days are like that but at least you caught one to make the trip worth while. :)

Here's a shot of the lake when I arrived there, and a shot of the only bass.

This lake is an awesome spring lake with good numbers and good sized bass.
It's also very famous for it's pretty colored bass.

I didn't realize your water was already that cold. BRRRR

JerkBait was definately the best choice given the conditions.  Did you try a Rattle trap?

Bassinkorea

Shawn, I didn't try a rattle trap due to the fact that this particular lake has a 95% weed coverage during the summer, and now that the weeds have died off, the bottom is covered with a LOT of silt and the trebles would of been clogged up on every cast. I tried several different crankbaits and snagged up with silt on every cast.
The water depth is only 6~7 foot all over this lake.

Steve, that fish looks alot like a spot with the dark lateral line and the white belly. Next time your there and catch one of those fish check a couple of their tounges for tooth patches.

Bassinkorea

I have never noticed any teeth on these bass's tongues before, but then again I wasn't looking for them. I will check them the next time I fish there, probably next spring.

At first glance I thought it might be a spot too but the lines below the lateral line are broken up where spotted bass are pretty defined. The key for me is always the jaw line. If it extends behind the eye the it's a largemouth. Spots only go to the eye. I'm betting that water was gin clear.

Beautiful fish Steve!!  You really have some great looking water over there!  Come to Mississippi and play in the mud with us, you'll really appreciate it  lo

Steve, the water at this lake (and most other waters in this area) are not clear at all. At best, there is only 2 foot visibility.

that is a beautiful cold water bass...love their colors when the mercury dips...

and I'm chuckling...as 'this time of year' with those temps...they get out of the water and go all 'stiff' like that... ~roflmao

again, great shot!  what a beautiful day and an absolutely perfect fish!

Thanks CF!
I know what you mean about how stiff they are at this time of year, maybe that explains why they don't like to can't commit to taking our lures unless we drop them right on their noses  lo
