I'm pretty techy and if you need help with any kind of hardware, I'm here to help you out.
I've built 4 computers and god knows how many laptops I've owned. If you want to know more about PC Building or anything else, just ask.

As a matter of fact, I have a Toshiba that I need to replace the cooling fan in. Any idea about what is involved?

I build PCs, but don't usually mess with laptops, basically because my hands are a little big for those little spaces.  ~roflmao

You can unscrew the cover that's underneath the laptop. Everything else I really need to see to give you advice.  In laptops the only real thing that was meant to be interchangeable is the ram. You might be lucky and the fan might only be held to the laptop by a few screws. If you manage to do that then I'm sure you can find a fan that fits your laptop to replace your old fan.

What I recommend is, if you can sacrifice portability than you can invest in a cooling pad.

That is what we were using until we replaced the machine.  Now it is sitting here, and I thought I would tear it down and fix it, then give it to a neighbor kid or something like that.  But who knows, probably let it sit here for a while, do a complete wipe on it and donate it to somebody overseas or whatever, let them mess with it.

If you have anything important on that hard drive you can take it out and put it into another laptop/desktop. You can also wipe it and sell it on ebay. You would only get a bit for it or you can send it overseas like you said. Good luck with it anyway, I hate laptops and that's why I stick with desktops.

Yea, me too, easier to work on, and soup up.   ~roflmao

We have laptops for when we are sick or traveling, the only reason I really have mine is as a backup for the wife.   ;D

Unless you are putting the hard drive in the same system, you will have to wipe it and reload if you are going to do that.

I'm not sure about that. I heard that too but when I had a failing laptop and some photos I needed were on the hard drive. I used another sata cable and connected it to my desktop and I was able to open all the files. Maybe you have to wipe you drive if you're connecting it as your main OS drive but not when you are using it as a secondary drive.

Keep posting any techy stuff, I'm not expert in fishing but when it comes to computer hardware and software I feel like I can say things knowing for sure.

When I do a Machine clean to give away, I do a governmental security wipe of the whole drive, takes a while but worth it.

I might put something Linux on this one, just don't know what to use anymore, it has been a long time since I tried Linux.

Anyone know of a freeware program that will get rid of an encryption virus.  It locked up all my personal files and was trying to blackmale me into giving them 500 bucks.  i let the time lapse so Im not expecting to get the files back. I have a backup of most of the stuff on the drive, but its been a year since Ive backed it up so the past year is lost.   I believe that even the shadow copies are likely gone, but i would like to get rid of the virus.  Ive tried maleware bytes, but the notice that I am infected still pops up.

Thats not the virus I have, but thanks.  There are several now, and they say this one is the worst yet.

I used to make viruses (strictly for educational purpose). The only antivirus that seemed to get rid of them is ESET NOD32.

http://www.eset.com/us/home/products/antivirus/

A virus might only be 90% encrypted and only a few antiviruses might be able to detect it. If you received the virus from a file and you still have the file, go tn virustotal.com and scan it. Whatever antivirus detects it, can also remove it.

Just try every free antivirus on the market. Until one of them detects it. Is it a RAT? Remote Access Trojan? (is someone controlling your computer?

Also Antiviruses update their database daily so what was undetectable yesterday might be detectable today. Depends on how serious the hacker is. If he's doing this as a living and updates his encrypter daily than you might be in trouble. If it's someone who pays for an encryption service then you still have a chance because they usually don't update daily. Good luck man, I usually just do a system restore as soon as I get a virus. Too afraid of my information getting stolen. Also report to IC3.gov is you know who did it. I think they can also take reports for blackmails. Not sure about viruses though.

you can also mount the HD in a bootable Linux CD/DVD and copy everything over.
