Short Timer

Hey all. My name is Steve and I am here for just a short while. Company sent me down here for a new contract on the Mayport base and I'm only here till Oct 17. I grabbed a rod and a few baits when I got here and have fished some of the retention ponds around that I've read about on different forums with no luck. Oh, I forgot to mention I'm here from the Fredericksburg area of Virginia. Any help leading me to a decent pond I could catch a few from the bank or anyone who would consider taking me out fishing I would greatly appreciate it. I'm staying at Jacksonville Beach but will more than likely get kicked out shortly due to Irma but maybe after she blows through I can get on some fish with some help. Thanks in advance, Steve P.S- Just got back in town from running from Irma  :)

Hey Steve I'd recommend since you're staying on Jacksonville Beach fishing the beach for whiting and maybe even some redfish and trout.  Look for sloughs along the beach on out going and incoming tides. The fish will be much closer to shore than you think. They are eating sand fleas.  I have caught a lot in the surf when I was stationed in Mayport, also the Mayport Jetties can be really good for red fish, flounder, and trout at times. I'm talking about the Jetties inside the base behind the deguassing range building. Live finger mullet is the best bait.  Good luck.

Hi Steve, I'd love to help you out but I don't know the Jax area. It's been tough fishing with this heat, but things might start to pick up soon.
Good Luck!

TR21PDCTampa,

Thanks for the reply. I'm a fresh water bass guy. I have no experience fishing off the beach. I'm hoping to get some angles on the bass but I do appreciate you getting back to me.

Understand but without a boat, bass fishing in the Jacksonville area is going to be basically neighborhood ponds. I was just giving you some info to "wet a line". Good luck!

Send Mike Noble a PM he lives in the Jacksonville area. I don't think he fishes much since he moved over there from Louisiana several years ago but he might know some spots or folks in the area who can help you out. He plays more now than  ~cf  ;D

OK Steve I reached out to Mike on Face Book and ask him to stop by here when he has time to see if he could help you out with some information.

Tressbasser  might be able to point you in the right direction also. He lives in Jax. Although he fishes from a little tin, he might know of some bank fishing areas .

I wish I could help.  I haven't fished here but twice and both of those times were in a boat.  Being at the beach, you are not really in a good location for freshwater.  You might ride down Beach Blvd and check behind some of the shopping centers for retention ponds.  Someone said a few years back that there was some good ones behind some of the Publix grocery stores, I think one was on Beach Blvd.  Wish I knew more that I could pass along.

I'm not from Jax, but I have found Google Earth is extremely helpful finding fishing spots in areas you are not familiar with. Identifying if you can fish the area is another story

Thank you all for all the inputs. I finally had success in getting bit. I only got 2 bites for about 4 hours fishing but got both fish. Both were dinks, about 12 to 13 inches. Got the first one on a watermelon re flake curl tail worm on a retention pond on Atlantic Blvd behind Academy Sports. The second came on a chrome blue back rattle trap at Huguenot Park. I'm getting the feeling that there are bass at these locations I'm fishing but they just aren't biting. Is that about right this time of year around here? I'm still hoping to stumble upon, or be lead to, a good pond or go out with someone in their backseat and get on some good fish while here. Once again, thank you for your inputs so far and please keep them coming,   Steve
