Howdy! I was just wondering what is best for top water fishing, (Braid or Mono). I'm not talking frog fishing, more like Buzz Bait, Poppers, Whopper Ploppers etc.

Thanks Homies!

Either one works great for topwater because they both float. Braid is better on longer casts because you have less stretch and can get a better hookset.

Personally I use braid no matter what. That way I don't have to switch rods back and forth if I'm going longer casts to cover water and then to shorter distance casts to targets as I come up on them.

You are going to receive a mixed bag of answers on this one. My preferred line for the baits you mentioned is Senshi mono.  lo

No. They aren't smart  enough to know one type of line from the other.  ;)

Lou is right. You are going to get members on both sides of the issue. Different people have different preferences for different reasons.

Like always I'm going to encourage you to try both and see which one YOU prefer.

If its got trouble hooks, mono. If its got one hook, braid.
My wife says she is gonna leave me if I go fishing one more time........lord how I will miss that woman.

Pretty much my thoughts HOWEVER I often use braid for poppers and walking baits due to 'relatively' easier ability to achieve better 'action' or presentation on longer casts AND if shorebusting or Kayaking I rarely have a specific rod setup JUST for frogging and another for other top water style baits.

Mono or co poly for me, I've had braid foul on the front hook with walking baits.
McCoys mean green is a good option , handles great and ties a good knot..
Sunline super natural is another good choice.

20 lb senshi mono all the way. No tangles and great for keeping fish pinned.
Braid for frogs and heavy hooks.

I would put a mono leader on the braid, less tangling the hooks.

Old Fishermen never die, their rods just go limp.

Exactly what I do, and exactly why I does it!

I prefer braid to leader for almost all set ups. But fishing top water is the only time I'll retie a leader on the water if it breaks off. Just the thought of tangling up treble hooks gets me irritated.

Agree. Also I've lost too many fish on very long casts with straight mono on say a buzzbaits. Braid main line and mono leader has incredibly increased my hook ups ratio with top water baits (minus slop frog fishing). Gl

One difference between braid and mono is that braid floats on the surface, mono floats in the surface.  Braid, because it's on the surface, is more effected by wind than mono.

WD40 straw or similar works well also.  ;D

You can also coat about a foot or so of line with fly-line dressing.  ;)
