Daiwa Pitch and Flip reel

I am interested in hearing about the performance of this reel.  FlatsNBay has ordered one and maybe he will chime in with a review when he tries it out.

I have one and got to use it a good bit up in Vermont last summer. The performance was great - everything you would expect from a Daiwa in this price range.

The biggest things for me were the size difference from the regular Tat 103 SV, the beefier gears and  the braking system which was redesigned specifically for the pitching and flipping techniques. I was a little skeptical on that but it turns out that you do notice a difference in that it seems to apply the braking differently so shorter pitches don't spin the spool the same.

As a bonus it has the SV spool so you can pitch and skip lighter baits with it along with the usual heavier jigs and the like.

The oversize handle and knobs were the only things I didn't really like about the reel but that's personal and I know there are some guys who like it.

I think it's a winner but let's see what Flats has to say about it.

oh boy -- just what i needed another Daiwa reel 

If it is anything close to the original SV103 (NOT the Tatual one, which is still good) consider it done.  Hell I will probably let the Bait monkey talk me into one.

I just tested my Tatula Pitch and Flip today. It is now  the most expensive reel that I own. First impression was it's smoooooth!  I had a bit of trouble getting it dialed in just right and I filled up the spool a little too much which led to some backlashes. Once I took off some line I got into my groove. I actually had a really good day and probably caught 20 fish on it. I must say that the reel feels like it has a lot more torque. I lost very few fish. I really like the feel of the reel and the performance so far. I plan on running it through its' paces and I'll post up a more detailed review.

I've used my new Daiwa Pitch/Flip twice and both times the pitching bite was really on. My first impression of the reel was that the reel was supposed to be set up so the angler doesn't have to make any adjustments to the spool or brakes. For me, I had a hard time getting it dialed in to my liking. The spool and brakes were just a little too loose for me. Once I got it dialed, whew look out!

I quickly fell in love with it. The reel is buttery smooth and the frame is very light with no flexing noticed. I really like the oversized handle and knobs. I've got the drag locked down. I don't know what it is, but the reel seems to have a lot of torque and power and I have been able to get fish up and out of thick stuf with confidence. 

The spool is really shallow and backing wasn't needed. I've got mine spooled with 65 lb. Berkeley X5 braid. It pitches really far. I probably wouldn't recommend using the reel for anything else but pitching and flipping because you could easily spool the reel on a cast. Close quarters is where this reel excels.

All in all, I really like the reel. It is my most expensive reel and I can really appreciate the quality. I pitch a lot so the reel is a perfect fit in my arsenal.

Great review Flats! 

Took me about a whole day to get mine dialed in last summer.  I'm not a fan of the handle/knob setup personally but most seem to like it. That's the ONLY thing I don't like about this reel.

Definitely agree that it's best to use it for what it's named for.
