Just got my 9 year old back home from the hospital with his second bout with kidney stones in 2 months.  One on the left and one on the right.

I didn't know kids could get them.

Who's had them and what tips can you offer ?   Thanks,

He's had sonograms and x-ray's  but they only show enlarged kidney and not the actual stones.  I guess a CT is next and possibly the procedure to break them up?

Man it's tough to see your little one hurting like that.

Appreciate hearing anyone else's experience - especially dietary prevention.  I know there are different types of stones caused by different things.  We don't yet know what type of stones these are.

Thanks,

Wow, at 9 that sucks.  Its like this, I've had 2 crushed vertabre, a collaspsed disk, a broken Femur almost to the point of being compound, and a 6mm kidney stone.  Of all of that the stone was the worst.
My current treatment is to drink 12 Lager beers every 2 weeks.  seems to keep me flushed before they get large.

6 mm is too large to pass.  Did you have the ultrasound to break it up?

Of the research I have found on the net,  there are atleast 5 or more types of stones,  each one resulting from something different.  Also physical deformaties in the uretha can also cause them to form.

We were not successful in catching the stone they say he must have passed in June.  Having the stone for pathology could tell us more about what's causing them.   This one seems twice as bad as the first.  Even though we are home,  he's still throwing up and having pain we are trying to manage with Tylenol Codine.  Probably end up going back to the hospital tonight if he can't pass it.

Poor kid,  it's terrible.   :(

Couple years ago I had a 8mm and it hurt like nothing I have ever experienced.  They kept saying it would pass thru, but it didn't and finally had to have it zapped.  I drink a lot of cranberry juice because they said that would help.  I haven't had another one and hope I never do.  Sorry to hear that lil guy is having these issues.  Hope further exams will help with avoidance.

No hints but plenty of prayers going his way.

I was in the hospital when I was like twenty.
Had a Motorcycle accident and completely crushed my angle, actually broke the leg bone and angle completely apart.
.
Shared a room with a guy who had stones....I kid you not...that poor guy had so much more pain than I was experiencing I was actually thankful that I had an accident and not stones.  :shocking:

Must have been my crappy insurance because they kept telling me it would pass and it finally did.  They had an IV in me and kept my system very hydrated and it passed and was caught in a screen.  The pain wasnt in having it exit the urethra, it was in tearing a path through the kidney.  It was like a small rock, I kept it in vial of liquid for several years, but it finally broke up into what looked like grains of sand.

I've had them twice. Worse pain I've ever experienced in my life. Jocko, I'm so sorry to hear a kid that young has to go through that!

A urologist told me to take a lot of vitamin C each day. It's good for us anyway, but helps keep them from forming as it makes the body acidic. From what he said, Calcium is one of the major parts of a Kidney stone & the acid helps dissolve the Calcium. However, he also said diet, or genetics could contribute to them forming.

Drinking a lot of water, preferably filtered, and juices such as cranberry is supposed to help once the stones are there, but the size determines the actual procedure for removal.

I passed both stones I had, but wouldn't wish having to deal with them on anyone.

I'll also be saying prayers for your son & a quick resolution to his problem!

I've had kidney stones twice.  The first one they had to remove.  The second one I passed.  I drink cranberry juice several times a week.  I also drank lemon juice and water every time I felt a little pain on the last one.  It, and a ton of water helped to lessen the pain.

Sorry for the little one's pain.  Good luck.

I've had them, just couldn't imagine a little one having them.  Prayers sent, he needs them!

I am sorry to hear your 9yr old son is dealing with kidney stones at such a young age. I had a kidney stone once, close to 3 years ago. I couldn't pass the stone and Dr. decided to pulverize it. Mine was caused by taking heavy dosages of Naproxen over a short period of time. I was dealing with some very bad fisherman's elbow at that time.

If the Dr can see the kind of the stone it is, they can study the stone and determine what could be the culprit(s). I never want to experience that kind of pain again. I am sending well wishes to your son as we speak.

oldjim

Had several stones, last one was broken up by jet engine spark plug saper, a piece was passed into urata passige behind bone and they could not see it. Finally they inserted wire into urata vibrated wire and disolved stone. Took 35 days to get it all done.

OH poor little guy!  Prayers going out for him.

I get them once in a while, only had to have one removed.  They say that I allow myself to get so dehydrated that they get a chance to start to form, then it is game over.

Ditto on above, hope he's feeling better. I've had at least 25 kidney stones, none in the last 3 or 4 years luckily.  Only one didn't pass.  They say I just have a pre-disposition towards them as there is nothing in my diet that causes them. Just drink lots and lots of fluids and the cranberry juice thing is an old wives tale according to my Urologist but if you like it then keep drinking it. Anyway, I can definitely sympathize with him.  They say the pain is worse than childbirth for a woman. Good luck.

jocko

Thanks for all the well wishes.  I do appreciate the prayers.  It's so tough to see  your kid suffer.  He's back to his old self today thank God.  It's really a brutal illness.  The pain is so bad,  little guy vomited so much.  It's like an exorcism.  Thank God for meds.

So he's on flowmax to open things up and drinking lots of water.  Home from school and we are screening.  We didn't find or catch the last one in June. Hopefully - he will get a CT to see if they can figure things out.

I know a lot of folks who have said they've had 1 or 2.  These folks are my age.  He's 9.  It's my fear that this is something more.  He had the bout in June and we thought he was done.

We thought the culprit was Gatorade.  He discovered Gatorade last year while playing football, and loves it.  Mom would pack it in his lunch.  I told her that was a bad thing because it's full of salt.  It's only for athletes who need it.  Not to be in a school lunch.  So he's been off Gatorade for 2 months.  Perhaps this second one is still just a result of that?  (He's now had 1 stone episode) for each side.  Maybe he will be alright now?

But I've also read that having stones can also be a result of a thyroid issue,  causing your metabolism to retain more calcium in your blood and urine.  There is a procedure that can be done to fix the thyroid and metabolism issue to help correct the body from continually producing stones.

I can't imagine 25 stones.

Proud PAPA of 22 children....22 kidney stones that is! When people say its the closest thing to a man having a baby they are 100% correct!

I havent' had one for a few years but recent tests showed 2 floating around in there.  :'(

I can tell you that when I was younger I played ALOT of sports. I did not drink water hardly at all. Not flushing my kidneys would allow the salt to crystalize in my body forming a stone. Keep your son hydrated, Jocko!! DRINK DRINK DRINK

Also, the acid in lemonade will disintegrate the stones, if you are lucky. So be pro-active and give him lemonade on a consistent basis.

Hope it helps....
1 is luck, but 2 is a pattern!

jocko

22  Oh my gosh.  I can't imagine.

I definitely believe before  he was not getting enough water and that could be a cause.  Since the first one in June - he's had nothing but water and we make him drink water all the time.  But he could have stones on both sides from before.  We moved to GA from up north where it wasn't hot.  I think the heat and not hydrating could be some of why this happened.

Canesfan

Yes, the hotter weather does not help. Probably why S. Florida is considered the kidney stone capital of the world.

Can't stress it enough to drink that water, not Gatorade, not PowerAde....100% WATER (with a little mix on of lemonade to dissolve any forming stones).

Kind of gross but I will tell it anyway...I had a stone. My doc told me to drink some lemonade before running up that ER bill. A few hours later, I peed copper color. The stone dissolved but scraped the walls coming out and blood was mixed in. It works. Again, be proactive and have him drink lemonade somewhat regularly along with WATER, if I hadn't stressed that enough already!  :)

jocko

Yeah,  both times he had blood in his urine.  Very scary for a 9 year old and Mom.

Thanks again to all for the tips.  It helps to hear from others who have been down the road before.  Some of you more than others.

jocko

So I got him some lemonade yesterday and he's been on Flomax.  We've been straining and yesterday we caught 3 stones!  Jeesh.  So I hope I don't gross anyone by posting a pic,  but here's one of the stones he passed.

When he had the issue in June, we strained but didn't catch any.  Now we have 3 in just one day!  They can do pathology on the stones now and hopeful get to what they are made of and how we can prevent them in the future!  Mama was happy for finally getting some out and caught to take to the DR.

Mission success. Wow, that is incredible.

Keep us posted. I for one, would love to know what stones are made of and reason for them.

That stone looks PAAAAINNNFULLLL!! OUCH.  :'(

Congratulations on your son "giving birth" which is what I call it when I pass a stone.  Hopefully the analysis can tell you what the cause may be.  I quit having mine analyzed a long time ago because they do not contain enough of anything to tell me what causes them say for example, "too much sodium or too much calcium", etc. which can help dictate your diet restrictions.  Mine are non-descriptive which means I am just prone to getting them and it's not a dietary thing.  Good luck in the future.  He's way too young to start with this nonsense. >:(
