Bad Housekeeping on board

I think my problem is that I am just lazy.  I have developed a bad habit of not putting away tackle that I have removed from a rod when changing baits.  I just throw the baits on the helm console with the thought that after the day is over I will put them away in the proper place.  Well good for me if I would just do that .  What really happens is that I get lazy and while cleaning up the boat instead of putting the discarded baits away where they belong, I just throw them in the passenger console all the while promising myself that I will put them away.  Fact is I don't get around to it until I reach in the console and grab a handful of hooks.  Not a pretty sight thats for sure.  Why is it I know what to do but don't do it.  While I am in confession mode I also don't take the lures off of the on deck rods.  I just strap them down and head for home.  When I get here and take the rods off the deck, I still don't take the baits off I just shove them in the rod rack in the garage.  Later when I am getting ready for the next outing I have to do all of this housekeeping.  This is really stupid on my part.    Are you guys lazy like me or do you actually do the right thing and put stuff away where it belongs?  No wonder I can't find all of my stuff most of the time.  It is scattered all over the place.

I still hang my pulled baits on the little hook hanger /cup n phone holder I mounted on the side of my console. They usually dry right there and I pull them for restocking at that point. The ones I finish with on my rods stay there and I take them inside unless going back out the next day. If they come inside the line gets checked for fraying, things get retied, lures are repaired, etc. I lose many rattles, skirts, and rattle bands get torn so I constantly fix jigs and check hook tips and any gear I used.

Maybe one out of 8 trips I get the lazy and leave a lot of used soft plastics in the catch all spots until the next outing then its emptied into one of my 5 gal buckets of sorted used plastics. Its easy to pull in after a long day and want to eat drink shower and relax. But I enjoy pretty much all facets of fishing preparation before and cleanup after as I relive what happened with the baits and what I can do different while its fresh on my mind.

Funny you mention this.  One of the guys I occasionally fish with is really bad about this.  A few weeks ago I fished with him and was giving him a bad time and actually took some pictures just for fun.  Here's what the front of his boat looks like.  Is yours this bad?
No this is not my boat!!!

Enjoying retirement in the great Pacific Northwest.  I've turned into a fair weather angler.  Why do it today when I can do it tomorrow?

Ron, I actually keep my boat ship shape.  It is just the lures that were swapped on any given day.  I just don't take time to put them away as I should.  I am pretty particular about what is actually on the deck.  I think this started a while back.  Before I got new carpet, my lockers were a bear to get open but now they open easily like they should and I can use this as an excuse any longer.

A funny thread! Love the photos.

I am fortunate to have two young sons ages 5 and 7 now who love to play with the old lures so they clean up the boat as soon as we get back home. They like to climb in the boat in the garage and play in it so while in there they clean up too!

Problem is most of those rubber lures wind up in the bath tub with them later on as they play with the lures to see how they swim in the tub.

And when bath is over that is where they leave them.

My fishing room is a mess. I tend to do the same thing but in that room. I need to do some real house keeping in there and get it straightened out, but it's pretty bad.

I keep a small plastic container to put all the lures I swap during the day with intention to sort them out end of day. Box is usually pretty full but at least not spread all over the boat. I finished an overnight tournament with a guy with so much stuff every where I was afraid of tripping and going overboard. Not fishing with him in his boat anymore!

Sounds like me, boat, fish tackle room, tackle making/maintenance room, at least until I get tired of not being able to find what I know I have. Interesting thread. lo lo

I thought I had a solution for my tackle room.  I put all the the fishing stuff into boxes.  Then I stacked the boxes on the tred mill since no one uses it. lo  The next thing you know I have more stuff so I get more boxes and stack them on the tred mill.  Meanwhile three boxes now on the tree mill I consolidate the thee boxes into two boxes and then take the two boxes to the garage.  So now I have a lot of stuff in boxes in the garage to go with all the other stuff I have in boxes in the garage.  Aside from being a bit more neat it is serving no purpose.  Some day I am gonna get some more plano boxes and re organize all of my tackle and then put them in the boat....OH wait.......The lockers are already full.. Guys, This is becoming a code red situation.  Maybe I need to go back down to santee and lose a bunch more stuff and that would make for more room and probably provide a lot of entertainment value.  Unfortunately I know what would happen......I would buy more stuff and put it in my tackle room.  Then I would put them into boxes and then I would stack the boxes on the tred mill.  ETC ETC ETC.  I think I am doomed.

It does kind of sound like you have a condition. A fishing condition that is. This is similar to a hoarding problem but hoarding is fed by ones own desires.
A fishing condition is merely the person desire to not be caught missing a sale, or being caught with out the correct bait, or a bait monkey has setup residence without ones knowledge. So its easy to explain, justifying the hows and whys of a fishing condition.  ;D Just keep organizing you will be fine your still putting stuff in the garage. Until its in your bedroom and kitchen you haven't got any worries.  lo

Bud, blame it on the monkey!!! Just blame the monkey, it's not your fault!
