Calling FD or anyone else with some experience refurbishing old rods...

An older gentleman (my wife's friend's father) came to me with an old rod and reel (he claims it was Lew's first rod, and he may be right). It's a heavy sapsucker, I guess glass, with an old original Abu Ambassadeur on it.

Anyway, he wants me to rewrap the rod. I did not give him an answer other than I told him I'd look at it.

I know I can get the old wraps off and rewrap it, but the problem is going to be the handle. It has a pistol-grip handle that's going to have to come off for me to get the rod in the dryer, and I have no idea how I can get it off without damaging it. Either that, or I'm going to have to figure out a way to have the rod turn with the handle intact.

Any advice?

I did a pistol grip by removing Chuck and temporarily sticking a flex coat self centering Chuck on. Was good to go after that.

Yeah, I don't have the type of rod dryer with a chuck. Just the rubber deal with a hole in it.

Next option then would be removing the rubber with hole. I think it's zip tied on for those. Then use rubber bands to hold rod in center instead.
