Hey there all,

Got a buddy with a 185 ZX Skeeter with a 150 VMax on her.  He's got a couple of things going wrong with the floater at the moment.

First is the trim.  It will trim up, but not down.  Now this is on all switches.  You can here a click, around the pump when you hit the up switch but no movement.  I told him it sounded like a soelenoid (sp) problem but couldn't be sure.  What could we do to get him back on the water with this?

Second is pretty basic I think as I didn't see it but from what he explained is the steering got stiff all the sudden and he basically was forcing the wheel to turn and something gave and now the wheel just spins.  Sounds like a broken rack and pinion on the steering to me, but like I said, didn't actually see that one.  Can you buy just a rack for these things or do you have to get the hole kit and caboodle?  Seems like I remember those cables being made into the rack or something....

The Trim problem will most likely be the trim relay, bad thing with that is Yamaha made there relays into one big relay for both up and down. Very impressive looking thing and all with the two relays made into one unit actually, bad thing is the price of it. It will scare him at what it cost. Yamaha did have trouble with these for a while too, I have replaced more than a few of them this past summer. I hope he has warranty for this item.

The steering does sound like one I am working on now myself, Figure the steering broke the cable or broke the teeth off the rack and or helm unit. First thing you need to make sure of is that its a dual cable unit, with the 150 and larger motors he should have a dual cable unit for sure. Now Telflex has the NFB dual cable units that have two cables at the motor and then they run the two cables into one larger rack at the helm unit. These make for a little tighter package under the dash than the dual racks under the dash so as to take up less room for things under there. Not sure if this will be what he has or not. Need to find out what he has. Then you will need to pull the helm and rack apart and inspect the teeth of both the rack and helm unit wheather its the single rack or dual rack. May have gotten the teeth of the helm and then you will need the whole system.

The dual cable with single rack is about 300$$$ The whole system helm and cable is 350$$$ The dual cable units that have two racks are a little cheaper. Let us know what he has and if you like I can give you the exact price of these so he will know what it cost through one of my vendors anyway. Should be close to what he could replace it for. When he pulls the cables from the boat make sure to have him tie on a piece of good strong rope and pull the rope into the place where the cables went, this will make life alot easier to pull the new cables into place.
