It will be interesting to see what people would do in this situation. I never thought about it much until I saw something on TV today.

Mike gets mad when I break off.  LOL but we fish as a team, and I know what it's like when your trying to keep your mind in the game and have to keep going back for a bait.

Most times we just got get it, but there are times I'll just bust the line & if I was on the back seat of a Pro's boat I wouldn't even think of asking to go get it.   8)

I would depending on what kind of lure it was and if my pro boater was in the middle of catching fish. So i chose to ask to go back and get my lure. If just a worm and weight i would just lose the lure.

I'm fishing as a co-angler for the BASS open on Red River this year and there is no way i'd ask my pro to go back for anything i snag, snip it and forget it, chalk it up, but continue fishing, retie and get back out there and catch some fish. i don't doubt there are some guys that totally wouldn't mind backing up, but i wouldn't feel right about it.

They don't go get their lure when it gets hung up...Why do ya think they carry so much of one color or bait type.

My favorite and related FLW Pro...just purchased 100 baits from my favorite lure making sponsor here on the UB  ;)

He gets hung up... he cuts the line and ties on the same lure...and is back power fishing in a minute.

I have had one person tell me "break it, we are not going to disturb the fish" and I respect her with all I have. Most say don't lose it, we'll go get it...

when i fished the flw series tournament if i got hung up they would just say hold on i will back up. if its a soft plastic i was just going to break it but all three i fished with would say not to. if its a crank bait or something i wouldnt break it or think about it. now if your hung up every other cast it may get old fast for them but if its one or two times it shouldnt be a big deal. doug

When we were watching Boyd Duggett fishing in the Classic he got hung on a bait bucket that was tied to a pier and he was flippin a tube at the time... I would ask them to go get it no matter what it was if it was a 1 or 2 time deal... If its a reaccuring thing i wouldn't ask because that really gets old having to unsnag someones lure 10 times a day.

If it was a really expensive lure "OR" if it was my last lure of it's type and the Bass were really onto them, then I think I would ask the pro to turn and retrieve it. It would work visa versa, if the pro was hung up, I would also assist if I could.
Just my opinion  ;)

I've never co-angler or fished in a tourney but it seems like this might be something to establish on the dock.

I know a guy back home who fished the FLW two years ago as a non boater.  He fished with a couple well named pros.  He said be sure to bring several of the same lures you plan on using.  He said when you get hung, you break it.  There was no stopping to retrieve any hang up.

That kinda killed what I said, but what do I know, I have never fished a tourney with a pro. From now on the "bait monkey" shall be my best friend to help me make sure I have plenty of lures.  :roll2: :roll2:

It sure wouldn't be east to break off a 15 dollar crank. :'( :'(

Have never fished with one of them big named pros, but I would consider it an honor and the price of breaking off baits is part of the price of the boat ride.  Now there are exceptions - expensive CBs I'd have to get them to back up.  That being said I would probably stop using that bait and start using a bait I was effective with without getting hung all the time.

That is an interesting question. I have fished with pros as a co-angler in several tournaments and never have had a problem with asking them to back up so I can get my bait. Most of them know that we dont have unlimited resourses like they as far as getting baits to use.

Now on the other hand, since it is my call and my bait I try to use a little bit of judgement in asking-- crankbait and I know I can reach it,I am askingif it is to deep oh well
spinnerbait--- thats my bait monkey I have all I need and constantly buying more, so unless I am catching fish on this particular bait,I will break off. Soft plastic--- breakoff immediately. I have also had them tell me dont break off just say something and they will turn around and go back, but I try to judge when that is best.

I even have had a very serious backlash on a reel that could not get out, and was cussing a blue streak and started winding it up, so I could use another reel, and had one stop fishing and get out the backlash took him 30 seconds, I was shocked.

Stump bumper

I fished a local chapter BASS in Upstate NY that required all lures to be retrived. Never firugured out how you did that if you broke off in a fish. :-\ But I think if you can get it, get it. If a "Pro" doesn't have time to get a crankbait hanging on top the water what's next? Not enough time to pick up the garbage dumped out of the boat, throwing his used mono overboard? I have had people take my head off for a cigarette butt.
Not to metion that crank could be worth $10-$20, I not willing to lose to many of those.

I have not fished with a pro, but I would break off if I was fishing with them in a tourney.

Depends on the situation. If going back would require the boat to go through cover and ruin the spot I'd probably cut it off. If it was a crankbait snagged somewhere reachable I'd ask to retrieve it. A worm I'd probably break off.

I'm of the opinion that if you don't get snagged up a few times in a day, you are not fishing the right spots. It's the nature of the sport and the fish we target.

POE

it was was a worm or shakey head i would break it off no problem. but i dont have endless income or endless baits so if it was exspensive i would ask to go and get it. just think he may get in a bind and needs someone to grab the net, i know i would help him net a fish so why coulndt he go back and get a lure undone for me

coldfront

Good question, but for me not really that difficult.  I'd break the first one off, which would give the 'pro' a chance to indicate how he/she felt about it.  If they offer to go back and get the next one, I'd take them up on it...

Now, if he's fishing shallow brush and I insist on tossing a rogue in there...well then that's another story.  I'm just being brain dead and shouldn't hold him accountable for my poor decision making.

If it's cranking deep rocks/ledges...a couple of 'bowstring' efforts would get the pros attention and they'd let me know what they wanted to do...probably be effective the first 2 maybe 3 times, but then I gotta figure they'd leave me to my own devices...time is money afterall...

Now, I'm assuming this is at a tournament with 'large' payouts...I wouldn't be asking KVD to go back and help me get my crankbait.

Tritonrob

Good question.  I too have had the honor as fishing as a co angler with the pros.  Jigs, soft plastics and some crank baits just break them off and not even think about it.  An expensive Lucky craft or custom made crank that I didn't get caught doing something dumb then yes I would have no problem asking them to go get it and change up to something different.  After a few times I have broke off have had pros tell me I didn't have to that. They have even offered hooks, jig heads and baits for doing that.

Americangirl

When i use to fish years ago as a Non boater, I would break off preferrably before my Pro partner saw me in fear she would get mad.. ha....never understanding what the big deal would be to get me unhung.... Well now on the Pro Side, I understand the concept.. when your retrieving a possible $15 bait you are doing so by going into your fishing hole, disturbing it tremendously....In the front of the boat, i will break my own off today unless i am fishing for new fish..If my co Angler gets hung and I am in a honey hole, I will offer to buy her a new bait or give her one of mine just like it, and there are times it is feasable to go right on in and get it....but i never get angry over it. It happens to all of us

BUT... the morale of that story was that a $15 bait can cost you a $50,000 Finish

depending on the pro lo lo, if i co to KVD I'll break the line and smile, if its a no name guy who got there by mistake i would go : look dude we are backing up or I'll tell everyone i caught all the big fish .
seriously, I would break the line out of respect and save time, if I'm there to fish with a pro i guess I can afford losing a $15 lure, I think i only lost like two cranks and a few spinners, I would not even bother thinking with a worm snagged.
