Thanks to gsoc for knowing about this link.  Just run the test and find out how fast your internet connection is.

By the way, I was 210kbs download and 205kbs upload.

Mine tested at

Geez, you guys are cooking with gas!  Anything with a 4Mb/sec download speed is flying.  You must have good cable modems.

Cable is supposed to be 4MB/sec or so, but it is like a "party line". The more folks using it in your neighborhood the slower it will get (or more correctly the less of that 4MB there is to share).

I'm on a low-end DSL "lite" service.  200k is sooo much faster than dialup.

Finally, it is the download speed that makes the difference.  Your upload speed can be pretty slow because the short messages you type don't take much time anyway.

I notice if you try it at different areas, you get different speed results..
Could that be because of the distance? I tried Ga which is closer and got a faster speed.
and Wa state which is furthest from me and got a slower speed.
Ga = 1490 KBPS download
         348 Upload
Wa= 1487 KBPS download
         319 KBPS upload

I take it distance has something to do with it?

nlareau

Yeah, I can imagine that distance would make the test run a little slower.

OK, just thought Id test both ends of the spectrum  ;D

Hey was that a poke at me for typing short messages  ::)

To me the upload speed is the most important because most of the day I am adding files to one site or another around here and if it were not a fast connection I would be here twice as long and I just don't think that is possible  ~shade

As a webmaster, you are not the average profile of an internet user.  Most folks are like me who type in "http://www.ultimatebass.com", which is a real short string to send even at 56kbps, and then get a big download from the site.  That's why most links are setup (optimized) to download better than upload.

I know we have looked at some of the graphics on the site and how large they are because I think that most of our users are using dial up and I have been looking for a template that is "lite" so that it wouln't take so much for the folks to download it each time they visit.

I think I have found one but it will probably be a while before I am able to put it into action due to my committments at the moment.

It sure would be good if we could stream line the site so that it was a bit faster for those that are using dial up  ~c~

The other part of the upload thing is most uploads are compressed to the max, and that speeds up alot, as a means of easing memories in individual purter, and stuff like that many of the websites are not compressed when they download.

My problem is I'm payin for up to 3mbps, and I'm only gettin half of that, so I think it is time to call my provider and give them heck.  ~xyz

very consistent 6mb down / 400 kb up.. and its still not fast enough!!   :)

yep you pay big $ for fast upload (because your considered a business).. A T1 or business class Synchronous DSL (SDSL) will set you back $500-$1500 a month depending on location, speed and options...

Holy Cow  :o

I will stick with my cable for the time being! I think Mike would move me out for that price LOL
