I have a 2005 Nitro 750 NX SC w/Mer 125 Saltwater. It's white trimed in gun metal w/blue stripes and the saltwater motor has a blue stipe on the motor to match....looks pretty nice.  GPS at 56-59 depending on load and has almost all options on it. Will try and post pics soon.

Sure glad yo could join up with us Mitch.  Get some photos up and lets chat about your set-up.

What made you decide to go with the Salt water option?

mitchell

To tell the truth it was the fact that they couldn't find a Merc. cover for the 115 they had in stock. I told them I didn't want it to say tracker marine even if it was the same motor and couldn't afford to go up 4000.00 for the 135 opti. I found a 125 saltwater down in houston and had them trade there 115 for it. After it was set up they all where amazed at how well the color on the motor matched the boat. 2 weeks later I went back to BPS and they had 2 different boats set up the same way. I just added a hydofoil fin (SE 300) last night to help the handling at WOT and Hole shot. Going out in the morning so i'll post the results later. Going to try and get some better pics this weekend for the board.

Do you have a jackplate on yours?

mitchell

No, I had them call the Merc set-up team and they said that they would not put it on because of the HP to lenth ratio. Said it would put the motor to far back and make the boat unbalanced and handle badly. Not sure if thats the truth but why would they turn down more money. The motor wasn't on the boat so it would have been easy to slap it on and pocket the money but they said not to do it. The way its set up seems to be good...recommended WOT RPM's 5250...My boat runs 5200-5250 every day so I'm guessing they know what there taking about. The main reason I was going to get a jack plate was because alot of people used them to obtain max RPM's at WOT for top speed....I got that from the get go, Lucky or Good either way it works for me.

I helps out on the hole shot, by setting your motor back its like a teeter-totter and keeps the bow from lifting as high up on the punch so you cna expect to plane out faster.  Also helps with motor hight adjustment, just easier to do when you don't have to take the motor off and move it up/down a peg at a time.

Mitchell, I was told the same thing about putting a jackplate on my boat. Since my boat is only 17 ft, everyone said the most setback they would go on a plate was 3-4 inches & that even then I would chance having handling problems. So, I decided against it.

Ron Fogelson

I just thought that if you had decided to put a foil on it, maybe you were unhappy with hole shot or something.

bassadict69

I am anxious to see how the foil works out. My holoeshot stinks & have been thinking about getting one.

mitchell

Well BA the results are in on the hydrofoil fin..........What a difference that fin makes, WOW! When I put it on I was worried that it was too small to do what it said it would...Boy was I wrong!

I took off at clacks and had to start trimming the motor right away because it planed so fast it started pushing the bow down in the water. I can plane out in 3-4 sec. now by myself, fishing gear and full tank of gas. With Kennyp and his gear it still keeps the bow down and planes faster. You can go faster when your going slow in shallow water (motor trimmed up some) without standing the boat up. You can stay on pad at slower speeds and it helped the handling in the rough water. Didn't notice any speed loss so for $50.00 i'm very happy with the results and Kennyp said 2 thumbs up on the performance. Would recommend for small tournament rigs like mine and yours.

Good to hear it made such a big difference. Now I have something else to plan on saving a little extra money for!

Thanks for the update!

mitchell

Put a SE sport 300 Hydrofoil fin on Kennyp Procraft 185 w/150 Saturday and tested it Sunday. It cut the bow lift in half and planned out in 5 seconds with 3 full size guys and alot of catfishing gear. It used to stand the bow up so high you couldn't see for a few seconds and when you went to stop it would do it again but now its smooth both ways. This also helps in preventing the backwash problem.

Thats a load of crap, I have a 700lx and was recommended a jackplate, and will be getting one.  There is a guy on other board that sold his 700lx but was getting 63 on a gps with a jackplate and a 115.
They just dont think you should get a plate for a small boat... i find it amusing that i can pay 200 bucks for a plate and get at least a 3mph gain, and get laughed at.  But they will charge you 3000 for a motor UPGRADE that will net you MAYBE 2mph.

I got 53 gps going up river, no wind, glass water, I wieghed 190, my bro weighed 225 3/4 a tank of gas, all my gear.  I had no jackplate.  I cant wait to see how it goes now.

mitchell

Are you taking about them saying that I shouldn't put a jack plate on my boat? Would like to know how yours works out.

I will definately let you all know. I have asked quite a few people and they tell me that Im paying to much to get a little ole boat to "try" and run with the BIG boys.
look, if i can get the most out of my boat for 200 bucks....Comeon, Id be stupid not too.  I also got some BS for wanting a hot foot, which i got on Ebay for 30 bucks. Thats a safety device more than a "BIG BOY" only toy that i was told it was.
Point is that a lot of guys with big boats seem to think guys with smaller boats dont need or deserve to have the things and frills their boats come with.
Again they will think nothing of dropping 3-6k on an engine upgrade for an extra 3 mph, yet laugh at me for dropping 200 on a plate, and 40 on a foil etc.

JBlack

Hey J10B,
Did you ever get that jackplate?  Was just wondering how it worked out if you did.  On a side note, I have a 750NX with 115 merc, no jackplate, no fin.  It probably takes me a couple of seconds to get up on plane and the bow doesn't really rise excessively. I don't really have anything to compare it to, but this should be acceptable huh.  Are you guys having a lot of difficulty getting up on plane, or rather, what would be an example of a bad hole shot?  More than say 5 seconds to get up, bow going straight up, ?   :-\

Thanks.
JB

mitchell

I think anything around 5 secs from stop to on plane is good for the weigh to horsepower ratio of the 750. My bow would lift up pretty high with all the weight in the back until I put the fin on. It also would suck down in the water if you slowed down to fast which would raise the bow and block my view. Now the bow stays down a lot better and helps with the planing. With a full tournament load(3 batteries, full of gas, 2 people, and tackle) mine planes out in 5-6 secs. I would like to know if a jack plate would help the top end!

It is going on wednesday,  And I get back from this deployment in about a week.
I plan on running it with the current 15 month old plugs... yeah i just need to get it out on the water.
I have a 22p laserII and get on plane in seconds, and never bury the tail unless I have teh trim all the way up.  I know my motor is too low, so my plane may take longer with the plate but we'l see.

J10B

OK so the wife took it in for me and Terry and Ron said OH YEAH , when she asked if I will see a difference.

Thats a B&W opinion of plates. Note there is nothing saying you shuldnt put one on a small boat.  The hang up there is that a 17-18 footer doesnt NEED to go fast.
Trouble is they race 14 footers with JPs.  Oh and Allison, who makes my next boat..... feels its HULL and PAD based.. so length means NOTHING. Transom strength is what makes us be stuck with smaller motors.

J10B

OK i havent taken it out but it gained 500rpm... No steering torque.  That alone was worth it.  I'll GPS it as soon as i can.
