Say What ?

Just wanted to share a story that happened today on the river.  She who shall be obeyed is my fishing partner on most days.  Today we were on the river she on the back deck and me on the front.  Now since we are both senior citizens our communications sometimes breaks down.

We were not having a success catching fish and we were just on a tidal drift enjoying the peace and quiet of the outdoors and casting our baits into likely fish locations.  We weren't saying much just taking it easy when the silence was broken when the wife says " I saw a squirrel".   After a little more quiet is said  " A squirrel......in the water"?  Her reply was immediate saying " Yes where else would it be"?  After another short quiet pause, I said  " I don't ever remember seeing a squirrel in the water"  At that moment the Mrs started laughing and said  "NO you Idiot....I said Swirl".

I have to tell you that we have been laughing about that simple communications problem all day.  It seems to happen more frequently as we have aged.

Yep, I tossed a NuTech Crazy jig over that way with an acorn trailer.  I think the Trailer vibrated off.

My wife and I do that a lot now, I've been doing it since we married, I have no middle ear in my left ear. Drives her nuts when I say what, what, I can't hear you, sometimes I do it on purpose, keeps her on her toes!

Two years of jet noise and sleeping under the flight deck directly forward of the arresting gear on the USS Independence  reduced my hearing a bit. Not so bad as some, my hearing tends to be more selective with the better half.

Having my ear drum ruptured twice and setting between two 1,600 HP diesel engines in the Navy for 2 years did a number on my hearing, not to mention old age. When my wife and I have a communication breakdown she tells me I can't hear and when she can't hear me she says I mumble

I have some hearing loss from too many years of playing in loud rock bands. I can sometimes use it as an excuse that I didn't hear what the boss lady says but she has been catching on and makes sure she comes to where I am if she feels it's something i really need to hear. I don't always agree. 

And so, all these years I have been putting my lure up in trees fishing for squirrels it turns out it is a legitimate technique.

Even with my new hearing aids I still have some problems. The audiology doctor at VA also suggested not wearing them when I fish because of the sweat affecting the filters in the earpiece. He also suggested not wearing them at concerts or hunting, of course.
I still miss what people say over the radio at work and things said by Grandson and Wife. Oh well.
