okay, lots to get set.  but seems to be some interest in this for the coming fall.  know of at least two questions on the table

1.  Choice of lake/location:  Guntersville and West Point:  let's discuss pros/cons of each lake/site.  Fall on Guntersville is kind of known for a grass mats and frog bite.  What is known about West Point in the Fall?

2.  timing:  Thursday arrivals... Sunday departure.  or whatever works for folks.  something to discuss AS WELL AS WHICH week/month!

as you talk about the lakes, discuss, suggest timing for those lakes and why?  how does fishing tend to set up?  tough bite?  excellent bite?

this is a start...  has to be somewhere to start.  let the discussion begin...

and if there's a BETTER lake, another lake to offer...  toss it out here as well.

Also accomodations are a consideration. Is this a thing my wife could attend? Or a Buddy maybe? I am new to UB as far as these outtings go, so just curious.

Larry, in the past we have had several wives and/or GF's attend and there was no issue that I am aware of.    No problem with Friends either -- heck thats how we all became friends post rally.

I live on Gunt, so obviously there is a little bias.  BUT, what I will say is this:  if it is decided that it should be somewhere else, I am in either way.

as far as times go - you want the time when the grass looks like that toasted cheese your mom broiled in the oven for you.  When its no longer green, and barely starting to break apart.  Timing that is REALLY hard -- it depends on rain how long they stay perfect, and even after they break up there are still fish to be caught.
Again, just my opinion -- september is too early.  You want something towards the end of October and even into early November.  Of course, that makes it hard for some of the folks north of me.  I will say again I am open to any time.
Weather -- we have lots of "fake falls".  Meaning a couple windy says, we get a short break from the Summer and then summer comes back for a couple days.

the other thing I want to say is this:  we have had good years, really good years, and just plain bad fishing years.  But the one thing that has never been bad is the people.

Another option.  Never stayed but stopped in to check it out on the way back from Pickwick.

My first choice would be West Point Lake staying at https://highlandmarina.com/

I've stayed several times and the range of accommodations is a good mix of fishing cabins and luxury plus an onsite restaurant.

I've planned these kind of things in the past and the date is usually the most important.

I'll suggest the weekend of October 20-23.

This is based on the bosses schedule and she hasn't had a vacation since she started the PhD which hopefully is complete by then.

I figured as much but wanted to check ahead of time. Thanks for the info.

Thank You for saying this out loud. Would not want to offend either one.

Let's assume, for a moment, the date is Oct 20-23.

Also let's assume that the location is on the GA/AL border, either Eufala or West Point.

Who is seriously considering attending?

Not a full commitment but at least 75% chance you would be there.

If we have 10 or so I will take the lead on the planning.

I would likely be in. Never fished either lake and love new adventures

Unless I could team up with Zippy or another member from up this way, I'd most likely have to miss it. I can handle the 6 hour drive to Guntersville, but 8+ to West Point or Eufaula is a bit outside of my solo driving range and I prefer day trip  vs 2 day.

Assuming it's that weekend, I could possibly fly in if I knew I had a back seat and place to stay.  I don't have the time to drive my boat from Arizona to GA/AL....

I know there are many anglers from below the M-D Line on UB. Some of you are only a day's drive to the great water in the top tier of Southern lakes. Caintucky. Misery, Arkysauce, Okeyhomo and Tennessippy have great fisheries along with very good whiskey and bourbon. Southern Comfort, Planter's Punch and Ozark Headache were drinks invented in Misery. I know people say Planter's Punch was invented in Memphis, Tenn., but it was really the Planter's House Hotel on the St. Louis waterfront.
In the area mentioned are Kentucky Lake, Lake of the Ozarks, Table Rock, Grand Lake of the Cherokee, Bull Shoals, Norfork, Dale Hollow and a dozen other historic fisheries. Late October is hunting season and finding lodging is easy. There is 7 months to put the rally together. Maybe there is another lake folks would like to try. (I fished G-ville almost every weekend for 6 months while working at the Redstone Arsenal in Hooterville but would fish it again)

thinking about it... know Guntersville has a lot of 'draw'.   your inclusion of Dale HOllow got me thinking...
and further south, in the fall, is Smith lake.   has a bit of a reputation for schooling LARGE spotted bass around 'that time'.

caddyjoe77

great suggestions Wiz.  About the only place I have not been on that list is Grand and Dale Hollow.

as I said, I am in for pretty much anywhere that is a boat drive away.

Seeing Buds post looks like a great time and would like to meet other members of this great site. Unfortunately don't have the funds.
A bad day fishing is better then a good day at work. Take a kid fishing

Depends a lot on where it's held and the number of members attending, when you have four or five guys sharing a cabin and ten, fifteen, or more sharing in the food expenses, the cost isn't bad at all. A commuter flight could put you close to another member who's driving or close to the lake to be picked up by a member. I think Bud did that once or twice.

that was the thought.

but having asked and having no responses... not sure that reverting to Guntersville might not be best play.

mygreenihc

I can commit with 75% certainty that I can be there if it happens.  I have never fished Westpoint lake,  so i really can't comment on it,  but Guntersville and Eufaula are always winners.  Chickamauga might be another good option.

Depending upon how many decide to go,  accommodations become more of an issue on some lakes since we will all want to stay together,  so that has to be considered.  Guntersville is not much of a problem in that regard if we plan ahead far enough.

Jim (P_M) Toccoa, GA is 5 hours south of you.  You could stay overnight at my house if that works for you.

one more quick question to the crowd:  if we see $5 dollar gas this late summer/fall ... what does this do to all you all's budgets and abilities to attend?

caddyjoe77

still in no matter what as today regardless of gas BS -- just have to be more selective of ramps to put in at
