Dock Talk / Re: being as nice as possible ...

I do not tournament fish so I always try to get them back in the water as quickly as possible.  Everyone should know how to get a hook out of a gut hooked fish.  There are lots of vids showing the best way to do it, and it happens to all fisherman.  When taking a picture try to support the bass in two spots not just by the lip.  Especially important with the bigger bass.
Finally Bass are not fragile creatures.  They often hunt, or are hunted, in a thick jungle of weeds, sticks, and rock walls, and they race around in these waters. I have caught them after eating my bait, with big scars on their bodies, some healed, some fresh, many with hooks in them from other fisherman, a few had an eye missing, and once a gill rack was detached on the bottom, and these wounds were all healed and the fish were all eating.  Our Florida bass are surrounded by big toothy predators that will not just swallow them but tear them apart first.  They grow up in a violent world and the bass survive and hold their own.  Everyday it's kill, or be killed, we have it easy!  If these fish were so dainty they would never have flourished almost all over this country and some other countries!

We had hard rains today so I decide to test the waters this afternoon, and what a difference it made.  Water has been hot so the cooler rains had the fish active.  I got there and it was every cast for a while.  First they were small, but toward the end that changed.  I hooked into a 23" bass that put up a great fight.  Hopefully pics will follow.

he may not have known you were going to that exact dock, and it sounds like he did ask, maybe?

i know for me, if i see you all, i will go past and at least skip a dock or try talking to a kayaker.

biggest issue I have is y'all can be hard to see.  please wear orange or something, when that sun gets at the right angle i dont think the color matters.  I do take it easy BTW, im not one of those balls out boat drivers.

every kayaker i have run accross has been extremely polite and i return the favor.

Dock Talk / Boat - kayak fisherperson rela...

We're slow.  By boat standards, we are molasses slow.

I've been thinking about this since Friday. We were on our way to a skunk.  We both have motors on our kayak, so we pointed our plastic boats at some remote docks to see if the bass were looking for shade.  We wanted to hit the far left dock and fish them systematically to the right.  We were going a blistering 4mph.

A bassboat overtakes us and slows to about as slow as it can go.  We were about 100 yards from the docks and the bassboat just putts past us. It heads to the far left dock and gets there right before us.  He waved at us and points at the docks.  We hit the next dock to his right.   Thankfully we both get a decent fish. The guide then leapfrogs us.

This is a YouTube guy. I recognize his voice as he is talking to his clients. His video is at the location!   Haha.  I kept silent.  It want our day, and technically he did get there first.

Thoughts?  I never kayak around bank fishermen.  I can move easier than they can.  Just odd.

I'm not butt-hurt. Just wondering out loud.

Quote from: Pat Dilling on May 19, 2024, 03:38:14 PMOn our reservoirs especially, I use a spinning rod a lot.  My favorite is my Kistler Helium 7' ML.  I like it so much I got a personalized one for my wife.  For wacky stickbaits I use a medium action, usually a Dobyns Fury or Sierra.  I use a bait caster for stickbaits when I need to pitch accurately.  I have not devloped that skill with the spipnning rod.

My wife lnded a 9.82, an 8.12 and a 7.6 in Mexico, all on MH spinning rods, using 30 pound braid to 17 lb flourocarbon.

Sick!

Check and double check your battery connections. Since all this started at once, the battery is the best place to start troubleshooting. Having a volt meter to check as you move forward from there is a big help. I would also check the instrument panel ground since all the items mentioned are in that location. In fiberglass boats, ground connections are critical.
